Grass Trimmer “Taste Comparison” – Comparing 3 Types of OREGON Nylon Cord! The Techni 280 Decides the Range of Coverage!

Finally, summer vacation is over and the grass trimming season seems to be winding down.
However, the real season is just beginning and will continue until early autumn, so let’s stock up on items now.

This time, I kept saying “I won’t buy anymore, I won’t buy anymore,” but ended up getting 3 different types of nylon cord.
In reality, I’ve been using them separately and haven’t been able to do a proper comparison.
While it’s subjective, I’d like to compare these 3 types of nylon cord.

If I had to choose just one from these, I’d pick the Techni 280.
It has high overall performance and seems to have a wide range of coverage.

I’m an OREGON fan. I place absolute trust in them.

Each box has about 50m, so that’s 150m total.
I’m a bit concerned about how to use it all up.

What I purchased were these 3 items:
① Flexible Blade
② TerraMax 2.7mm
③ Techni 280
To be honest, if an amateur is just using it a bit, any of them would probably work fine.
But having one that cuts well, has good durability, and is convenient to use makes it easier for the user.

I’ll say upfront that the Techni 280 made the best impression.
So let me go into the details.

Flexible Blade
When you touch it, it feels somewhat like a cable tie – quite hard.
Both ends are slightly jagged and give off a strong impression of cutting well.

When rotated, it makes a whooshing sound, clearly suggesting low air resistance.
When actually used, it cuts with a sharp snapping sound.
However, compared to the others, it’s not remarkably better at cutting.
Also, it seems to produce less grass clippings.

Since the cord itself is fairly hard, when it hits rolling stones, concrete walls, or tree stumps,
it quickly becomes shorter.

It seems best suited for safe areas overgrown with just weeds.

TerraMax 2.7mm

When you touch it, it feels like a limp electrical wire. It’s somewhat floppy.
It gives the impression of tapping and cutting.
When rotated, it makes a buzzing sound with resistance.

When actually cutting grass, it makes a tapping sound and gives that impression.
It also seemed to produce more grass clippings.
TerraMax seems best suited for handling weeds growing on paved surfaces.
It can handle weeds on regular soil too, but TerraMax’s drawback is:

Cord replacement is somewhat troublesome.
Since the cord itself is floppy and soft,
the centrifugal force causes it to catch on the ratchet and won’t come out.
Once you get the hang of it, it’s easy to remove, but on first try it’s quite frustrating.

To me, it’s an impression of a nylon cord exclusively for paved surfaces.
If cord replacement were easier, I’d say this is the only choice, but
the fact that the cord catches slightly during replacement is definitely annoying.

If you insert another nylon cord from the entrance side, the ratchet opens and you can easily pull it out.
In the large image above, you can see the marks where the cord dug in around the middle finger area.
This is what makes it hard to pull out.

This is the price of softness.

Techni 280

The nylon cord that made the best impression this time.
When you touch it, it has decent tension and doesn’t feel too soft.
The surface is slightly textured, which apparently prevents it from melting from heat.

When rotated, it makes a buzzing sound that gives the impression of having air resistance and cutting with taps.
Like TerraMax, it also seemed to produce somewhat more grass clippings.
That said, grass clippings are basically something you get covered in anyway, so there’s no major difference.

The good points about this cord are that it cuts grass sufficiently.
And when it hits concrete or block walls, it doesn’t seem to wear down much.
If anything, it gives the impression of lasting quite well. True to its many good reviews.

Cord replacement is easy.
Since the cord itself has decent tension, it doesn’t catch on the ratchet.
You can simply push it out and replace it normally.

If I had to choose one from these three, I’d pick the Techni 280.
It provides sufficient performance for grass trimming.
Good durability and ease of cord replacement are the highlights.
Grass trimming is already dirty and tiring work, so I want to minimize unnecessary hassles. That’s what I think.

I also love using OREGON products because of their wide variety and good design.
I want to use items that look good even just sitting around.

Grass trimming isn’t as clean and smooth as people might think.
It’s basically dirty and tiring work, so choosing items that allow you to work as smartly as possible is a good idea.

Also, I’ve never used a chip saw.
Makita products have an AFT kickback prevention feature, but
it doesn’t completely prevent kickback.
Injuries from chip saws are no joke.

It would be great to be able to trim grass more casually, reliably, and safely.
