Today’s musings (‘\u03c9’<\/em>)<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Once we hit the “double-digit months” of October or November, time seems to accelerate all at once.
Is it because the days are getting shorter? How is everyone spending their autumn?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

There’s still plenty of work piling up, but the “homework” I’ve been carrying is gradually coming to an end, one piece at a time.
I’ve been working on Suzuki oil-cooled engine bikes again lately, and touching them, I’m really struck anew by how “they’re just really good.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What’s good about them is that there are really very few unnecessary troubles during the work process!
Bolts and nuts seizing and refusing to come out, snapping partway through, threads stripping and collapsing\u2014those shop-floor nightmares that make your stomach hurt almost never happen, so it’s mentally incredibly easy.
You feel the goodness of an era when motorcycles as industrial products were at their peak, everything perfected and complete.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Bandit 1200 (K6) still felt new to me, but doing the math coldly, it’s already a “20-year-old” neoclassic.
If we carefully review each part at this milestone and hit the right spots, we can enjoy it safely and comfortably for years to come ( `\u30fc\u00b4)\u30ce<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Since I did the same type of work on two bikes in a row, my hands move without hesitation and the work goes incredibly fast\u2026\u2026!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Adjusting valve timing is so satisfying when it snaps into the target value perfectly\u2014your brain releases endorphins.
But then you get “Hmm, I want to tighten it another 2 degrees\u2026\u2026tap tap\u2026\u2026tap tap\u2026\u2026oh no, I went too far (sweat)” which anyone who’s assembled an engine will definitely relate to.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The endless millimeter-scale struggle born from the fact that you “can adjust” with the elongated sprocket holes. If you’re the type who can’t compromise, you end up diving headfirst into this infinite loop ( `\u30fc\u00b4)\u30ce<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The black stuff isn’t liquid gasket.
It’s carburettor backflow and corrosion.

An oil stone couldn’t touch it at all, and I had a surprisingly hard time getting it clean ( \uff1b\u2200\uff1b)<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Everyone\u2026\u2026I’m pretty sure you can say with near certainty that\u3010reproduction parts won’t show up\u3011for this.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Unless it’s a model like the Z or CB with a massive global market, there’s no reason for a third party to tool up for this kind of part when you think about demand and profitability.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If you assume “someone will make a reproduction eventually,” you’ll be completely stuck the moment the OEM part is discontinued.
Get it from the maker while you can still get it officially\u2014don’t hesitate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If you get it now and stock it on hand, you can enjoy your bike with peace of mind forever ( `\u30fc\u00b4)\u30ce<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I want to refresh it as much as possible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Once you put the covers and tank back on, you can barely see these parts, so the sense of accomplishment and visual impact for the person doing the work is minimal\u2026\u2026. But when you come back to it years later, or when someone else touches it, seeing “oh, this was worked on carefully” feels really good and is kind to everyone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A mechanic’s sincerity shows most in the places nobody sees, deep in the hidden corners. It’s a little gift to the next person who works on it (including yourself) ( `\u30fc\u00b4)\u30ce<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Depending on the part, Suzuki’s typical low-quality bolts<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The reassuring? thread locker\u2026\u2026. It’s definitely good that it won’t come loose while riding, but when you need to remove it for maintenance, “can’t get it off” is a real problem (sweat).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Plus, depending on the model or grade, the bolts themselves have such poor plating that the surface is rough from the start. \u203bHigher-end models don’t have this problem\u2026\u2026. When rough screw threads get a lot of locker compound ground into them, removing it becomes a complete nightmare.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In these spots, don’t stick with Suzuki OEM\u2014\u3010just use Honda OEM bolts\u3011.
The surface finish and design are dramatically better, and the price is usually reasonable too. Choosing wisely and assembling smartly, even for a single invisible fastener, feels great ( `\u30fc\u00b4)\u30ce

The toughest yet! Shift oil seal won’t come out<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Honestly, this is normally a job that takes seconds\u2026\u2026. Most of the time is cleaning and facing, and it’s typical to wrap it up in 15 minutes flat.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But from the moment it came in, the whole bike had obvious aluminum corrosion, so I had a bad feeling about it\u2026\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I flushed in penetrating oil, warmed it thoroughly with a heat gun to use thermal expansion\u2014I threw every trick in the book at it, but this time it wouldn’t budge, not even a millimeter (crying).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If you force it, it’ll snap in an instant. This is the critical moment\u2014knowing when to back off and what to try first ( `\u30fc\u00b4)\u30ce<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Time passed\u2026\u2026sweating buckets for a full hour.
Finally got it out! This was definitely the toughest one yet (sweat).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I tried pulling with a puller and sliding hammer, but the seal, hardened by heat and age, crumbled as I pulled, a nightmare. The places to hook the puller kept disappearing as the seal fell apart\u2026\u2026that despair!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the end, I improvised a custom special tool (SST) right there on the spot, created a barely-there hook point, and managed to extract it without a scratch. I was genuinely stressed, but I’m so relieved I didn’t damage the case.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The oil-cooled bikes are entering an age where these old-bike-style troubles are starting to pop up, and I really felt it ( `\u30fc\u00b4)\u30ce<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I wipe the initial grease off the lip of the new seal and swap it for DuPont fluorine grease\u2014a luxurious touch.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When you think about the per-gram cost, it’s dizzying\u2014a super-premium chemical. But after that hour-long battle, this extra step really hits home\u2026\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“There won’t be any oil seeping now.” That absolute confidence. I never want it to leak again, never want to tear it apart again for that reason\u2014so I install the best insurance I can ( `\u30fc\u00b4)\u30ce<\/p>\n\n\n\n
