Lately, for some reason, my mind hasn’t been on my beloved motorcycle.
I’ve been thinking about why, and the biggest reason is my awareness of natural disasters. When I see the damage reports flowing across the news day after day, it doesn’t feel like someone else’s problem. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

It’s the same with traffic accidents. “I drive safely, so I’ll be fine”<\/strong> \u2014rather than being overconfident like that,
thinking through “what would I do if I were in that situation?” <\/strong> ahead of time definitely increases your options when the moment comes. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

I’m getting a bit off track, but even if you think water won’t enter your garage or home, the possibility isn’t zero. When you’re researching disaster preparedness supplies and simulating how to use them, your mind naturally drifts that way. (Plus, I recently welcomed a kitten, so I’ve been absorbed in hunting for cat supplies\u2014motorcycles are the last thing on my mind! <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Still, preparation now is truly essential for everything. When you actually need something, it’s harder to get than you’d think. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Whether you’re an individual motorcycle owner with a garage or a business like a motorcycle shop, I think flood preparedness should be on your radar now. Floods rush in before you know it and swallow everything. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

To avoid the worst-case scenario, let’s make sure to prepare early while times are peaceful. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Service request: <\/strong> Dramatic improvement in cooling performance (installation of Ohno Speed oil cooler kit)<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Challenge and goal: <\/strong> For a 1074cc large-displacement air-cooled four-cylinder, today’s brutal Japanese summers and traffic congestion mean battling rising oil temperatures, power fade, and oil degradation. We’re deploying a purpose-built cooler from “Ohno Speed,” specialists who know the Katana inside and out, to maintain proper oil temperature and dramatically extend engine life. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The key to the job: <\/strong> Fine-tuning clearance between the large core and the exhaust header, fender, and steering. Dialing in hose routing angles to completely eliminate tension and twisting (friction) across full steering lock, and preventing cracks with anti-vibration rubber mounts! <\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n

First, we’ll install the core guard.
We’re using the Active Core Guard Armies [TYPE-2].
The price is reasonable and it’s a product that does exactly what you need.

These days, core guards with edge processing have become really popular, but I’m not a fan of how shiny they look.
I think a more stock-like, understated finish is nicer.

We’ll wrap metal-reinforced trim from Amazon around the perimeter to reduce damage and rattling noise. <\/p>\n\n\n\t\t

The mounting method is a bit rough around the edges.
Instructions that don’t actually explain anything\u2014a standard in the motorcycle industry, right? First time seeing it, you’re bound to think <\/strong>“Huh?”
There’s a 98.25% chance of that reaction *based on our experience.
You thread a cotter pin through the gap at the end of the cooler’s corrugated fins, but…
since it’s the end, the workmanship is sloppy. If you smooth out the passage beforehand to make it easier for the cotter pin to go through, the job goes faster. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

We’ll secure this rubber plate by running a cotter pin through it, but it’s a tight fit.
If you use a drill or similar tool to enlarge the hole slightly beforehand, it’ll go through smoothly. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

You press the core guard in place, bend it with appropriate tension, secure it, and cut it.
You need a small, sharp nipper…
The Three Peaks KB-125S is one tool that’s truly unbeatable.
It cuts well even at the tip, which you’re not supposed to do, but it makes quick work of cotter pins like these.

I even use the tip to cut wire ring wire *though you’re not supposed to*.
It cuts flush like a tie-wrap nipper and is incredibly durable.
I’m absolutely smitten with this tool. <\/p>\n\n\n\t\t

The best part about this product is that you don’t need to make hoses…
It’s super efficient.

However, depending on the muffler, the hose might be close to the exhaust header, so you need to carefully control the layout.
Basically, it’s better not to use tie-wraps to bundle and pull things together, as that’s against the rules.
A permanent fixing method is safer and lasts longer, I think. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Time flows on… and the installation is complete.
Unlike the Anniversary model from before, the Final Edition frame doesn’t have an M6 fixed boss.
We extended a SUS304 T=2mm bracket from the M8 engine mount bolt to lay out the cooler. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

We secured it using the usual JCS P-clamps.
RS Components has P-clamps for 16\u03c6 that use M8 bolts,
but the quantity and price didn’t match up, so we passed.

When making things, I think it’s better to look for readily available parts as a last resort\u2014that information becomes useful too.
This kind of bracket is made from solid SUS304 so it won’t break.
No matter how much material you add, aluminum tends to crack over time.
I understand why aluminum is used when you don’t have machine tools to cut and machine SUS304 plate, but…
it usually cracks eventually.
Whether you make it stronger or keep it from vibrating is what matters.
We want it to last as long as possible.

By the way, we tapped M6-P1.0 into the plate side and used a lock nut, so it’s solidly fixed. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Make sure to circulate oil when replacing the oil cooler<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Don’t just start the engine right after replacing the oil cooler.
Air gets trapped inside the oil cooler.
Make sure to circulate the oil, crank it until the oil reaches deep into the engine and the air is purged and oil pressure builds up.

I haven’t ridden it since before the oil cooler replacement, so I can’t say for sure.
It’s probably dropping quite a bit, so it should be working (*\u00b4\u03c9\uff40*)

The line between “all motorcycle gear is ugly” and “convenient” is tough. <\/span><\/strong>

This Daytona DH-722 seat bag is truly the best.
It fits on almost any motorcycle, so it’s incredibly convenient.

It’s easy to attach and detach, has good capacity, and looks good too.
With this much capacity, light outings are really no problem at all, so I rely on it heavily.
This product is an indispensable gem for me. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
