Plans are uncertain\u2014parts availability turned out to be trickier than expected. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

So with that, let’s get into overhauling this legendary CVK34. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Target Vehicle: <\/strong> Kawasaki GPz900R Ninja (A15 Model) <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Service Request: <\/strong> Full overhaul of OEM vacuum-operated carburetors (Keihin CVK34) <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Symptoms on Intake: <\/strong> Minor idle fluctuation, sluggish throttle response on takeoff, fuel seepage from long-term storage, and contamination in the float chamber. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Key Points of Service: <\/strong> Complete disassembly of the 4-carb linkage. Ultrasonic cleaning to pulverize sludge in pilot passages, replacement of fuel joint O-rings, float valves, and diaphragms with new parts. Few component parts and easy disassembly\u2014I really love this design. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

…This is tricky. You see, when aftermarket kits get used, it really causes problems.
These aren’t true overhaul parts\u2014they’re positioned as replacement inner components.

They don’t deliver OEM-level performance right out of the box;
they require assembly and tuning, which is why various adjustment sets are included.
These are meant for emergency situations when discontinued parts are needed, or for one-time careful setup.

They’re invaluable when you’re in a bind, but they’re not plug-and-play, so it’s a tricky position.

Time passes… and the OEM needles still haven’t arrived… <\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Finally, all the OEM parts arrived. PJ\/MJ\/jet holder\/needle\/PS\/starter valve\/float valve & O-ring\/G\/K\u2014everything replaced.
It was an unusual situation, but it’s definitely something that could happen down the road.

When you can see the angle digitally, you just want to dial it to zero…

By the way, this is “Intercomp” brand… well, it’s all the same anyway…

Lately, I don’t use OEM steel bands at all.
Personally, I’m not fond of their shape.

While we don’t tighten them much, the OEM ones have a strong tendency to “fatigue.”
The part where the bolt sits stands up at a right angle and folds, right?
I think that degrades over time.

Worm-gear (screw-tightening) “embossed” bands are better\u2014
they wrap around and clamp evenly across the full circumference.
The band won’t fatigue and loosen. We want to eliminate even a 1% chance of secondary air leaks.
That’s the mindset behind our choices.
This time we used Norma and Orvic brands.

Nowadays you can easily look up band width and effective diameter online\u2014it’s a convenient world.
Knowing versus not knowing makes a subtle difference in the final result, I think. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The tester’s LCD is dead and hard to read\u2014I’m torn about sending it in for repair… <\/p>\n\n\n\n

I’m in the camp that cuts breather hoses at an angle.

Back in the day, someone told me “The hose came off!” <\/span><\/strong>and I’ve held a grudge ever since…
