There are so many types.
If you’ve handled a drill a few times before, you already know <\/strong>your own needs. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But for beginners, you might think, “If it spins and makes a hole, that’s good enough, right?” <\/strong>Well,
with some basic elimination criteria, <\/strong>you should be able to find the right drill to buy. <\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

First, I’ll proceed assuming a cordless drill.
And from the Makita app, <\/a><\/strong>you can compare products, <\/strong>so give it a try. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Assuming <\/strong>we won’t drill into concrete, I’ll exclude <\/strong>impact drills from consideration. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

18V or something else? <\/h2>\n\n\n\n

It’s better to go with 18V. <\/strong>Voltage is really important (setting aside 40V for now).
With higher voltage,
you can reduce the output <\/strong>and still use it. But with lower voltage, you can’t <\/strong>increase the output.
You can only adjust within the potential you have. <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We’ve already narrowed it down to four options. <\/h2>\n\n\n\n

<\/p>\n\n\n\n

All four models have nearly identical performance specs. <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The drill chuck diameter is 1.5 to 13 mm.
The difference in rotation speed is minimal.

Pretty much no worries <\/strong>at this point. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The deciding factors are just a few.

This is the one drill I use. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The highest torque in the 18V class: 140 N\u00b7m <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

With that torque, even at low speed it pulls powerfully! <\/strong>Using hole saws and similar tools,
you can drill large holes with real force. <\/strong>It’s also powerful when drilling into steel.

Drilling into steel is a breeze!
When fitting stainless steel pipes together, I use a hole saw to cut notches, and I was amazed at how much more torque this has compared to my old 100V Makita.

It has a clutch, so when the drill catches,

it won’t jerk <\/strong>your wrist around as much.
In other words, it’s easier on your wrists. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

To mention the downsides… <\/p>\n\n\n\n

It’s a bit bulky and somewhat heavy.
Overall length 178 mm, weight 2.3 kg. <\/h2>\n\n\n\n

It’s ideal if you drill infrequently and need high torque. <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ideally I’d want both, but if I had to choose one, it really comes down to your needs. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

To put it another way, it’s like the relationship between <\/strong>an axe and a sword. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
