Classic old bike problem.
Fork oil sometimes has a smell kind of like rotten eggs, right?
And sometimes… if you spill it on the floor, it’s the worst. If it gets on your clothes, it’s also the worst.

How many years since purchase? It apparently hasn’t been disassembled much, so we’re getting to work. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Service Request: <\/strong> Front Fork Overhaul (Full disassembly, cleaning, seal replacement, oil change)<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Condition at Disassembly: <\/strong> Years of aging (?) transformed the fork oil into a sludgy jet-black color, emitting a distinctive pungent odor. Damping was non-functional, a warning sign of advancing internal wear. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Key Points of Service: <\/strong> Checked inner tube distortion (bending) with a surface plate & dial gauge. Completely cleaned aluminum powder and sludge from inside the bottom case, installed new slide metals and oil seals, and fine-tuned to the specified oil level! <\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n

This era has no metal on the inner tube side. The contact is pretty tight.
Tight contact = the bottom case is wearing down, which is how it goes.

Nowadays, various finishing techniques have improved so much that re-plating and bottom case repainting make things look brand new.
However, depending on condition, the bottom case may not be reusable, so it’s good to assess the situation and make various investments accordingly. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

We didn’t measure, but it has some nice vertical scratches.
This time, we made the wise decision to reuse it without extra expense. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Topic:<\/strong> Full front fork overhaul & flushing out severely degraded “jet-black” fork oil. Details:<\/strong> Happy Wednesday night from the Decoboco tech bay! For part three of our Z1000LTD series, we tackled the front suspension. Draining the front forks revealed pitch-black, sludgy fork oil emitting a sharp, foul odor\u2014a clear sign of severe oil breakdown and long-overdue maintenance. We completely disassembled the forks, flushed out internal aluminum sludge, and checked the inner tubes for runout using a dial gauge. After replacing the slide metals and oil seals with OEM parts, we filled them with fresh fork oil and calibrated the oil level with millimeter precision. Verdict:<\/strong> The dynamic damping response was immediately restored, offering smooth compression and rock-solid cornering stability. Never neglect your fork oil!<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n
