As long as the bearing inner diameter matches, anything goes.

I stacked up the front axle and collar that were lying around, tightened them firmly, and spun the shaft back and forth.

A little tight, a little loose\u2014I taste-tested both.
Once you bolt it to the frame, the wheel’s own weight makes it spin pretty freely anyway, and problems are hard to feel.

With this method, you can sense those subtle differences.
Bearings are incredibly well-engineered parts that absorb all kinds of small errors and keep working.
The point is they function fine even if you’re pretty sloppy about it.
