Lately,

even OEM parts come with seal tape wrapped on them.
It might seem like what the manufacturer does must be the right way, but\u2026 <\/p>\n\n\n\n

They didn’t wrap it in the old days, so why wrap it now?

I think we need to understand the intention behind it (*\u00b4\u25bd\uff40*) <\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

Basically, fluid seeping from the threaded part (around the nipple) is\u2026 <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Even when the nipple is locked, fluid travels through the nipple passage and threaded part, causing seepage. Then when you install the final bleeder cap, pressure builds up and causes more seepage. Heat from braking causes seepage too\u2014that’s what’s happening.
This is somewhat unavoidable due to the structure.

However, it easily causes problems like damaging the paint or getting fluid on the pads.

So if wrapping seal tape prevents seepage, why not do it?
That’s my interpretation of why manufacturers have started sealing in recent years. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Actually, if you clean it thoroughly, there’s no leakage at all. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Lock the nipple \u2192 spray parts cleaner from the nipple hole (protecting the surrounding area) \u2192 use a thin-nozzle air gun on the nipple hole.
At our shop, during fluid changes, we go through this tedious process to dilute the fluid and blow out everything from the passages with air.

By removing it, there’s no paint damage, and if seepage still occurs, it points to a caliper or nipple problem.
Since no fluid remains in the nipple threads, corrosion is less likely.
I imagine nipple thread corrosion happens because residual fluid attracts moisture and corrosion progresses. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Keeping things clean and well-maintained definitely reduces trouble.
Titanium nipples are now available at reasonable prices. Since Tokico M7-P1.00 costs quite a bit, switching to titanium during an OH might be worth considering. That’s what I’ve been thinking lately. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
