Some people add fuel additives.
Others start the engine and inject engine conditioner into the intake. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

But you hear people asking: what’s the actual reality? <\/p>\n\n\n\n

I can’t say there’s no effect, but whether it’s actually effective is hard to say. <\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

The pros and cons are too much a matter of feeling, making them hard to compare. <\/h2>\n\n\n\n

With fuel additives, you can stop using them, so the results might be somewhat clearer.
But what about those products where you start the engine and suck them in from the intake to burn them? What’s really going on there?
There was a bit of a boom around ten years ago, and I’ve done this service before.
But the result was more like things seemed to improve a little… that level.
Honestly, dramatic improvements are rare. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

You can’t go back to before the service. You want to believe it got better… that’s just human nature. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Valve seat, piston clearance, and piston rings matter. <\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Even if you remove carbon from the combustion chamber, I don’t think it improves the contact between the valve and valve seat.
In fact, while the engine is running, the valves open and close at a furious pace, so if accumulated carbon gets removed, there’s a non-zero chance it could get stuck and cause a leak.

Piston ring tension won’t come back either, and piston clearance won’t become correct.

Wear and degradation are mechanical\u2014if some magic chemical could bring dramatic improvement, it would help both owners and technicians.
But such a good deal is basically like an investment scheme… <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Somewhat effective for prevention, not for restoring degradation. <\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Maybe public expectations are too high, making it seem like a dramatic change happened.
These products don’t restore mechanical wear and degradation.
You shouldn’t expect the kind of results you get from an engine OH or carburetor OH, and they don’t fix underlying problems.
Some people somehow get lucky and see improvement, so I can’t say for sure, but basically dramatic changes are low probability. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Be careful with any exaggerated or inflated claims. <\/h2>\n\n\n\n

In this age of information overload, it’s easy to get swept along\u2014I’m the same way.
Additives you can stop using are one thing, but I don’t want to dump questionable stuff into the combustion chamber.

Black liquid drips from the muffler, and you might end up needing a spark plug change too.
Running hard on a circuit track and really revving it to burn off carbon might actually be more effective. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

If engine compression is solid and fuel is supplied properly, starting should be easy even in cold conditions.
