I sometimes hear people say, “We’re in trouble without the right parts.” <\/p>\n\n\n\n

But come on,
there are so many options you can’t even choose between them all, right?
Though I suppose if we’re talking about “dedicated” or “bolt-on” type interpretations, there might actually be fewer options. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

It’s an amazing time we live in. Really. <\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

What really amazes me is that you can claim “We do custom work!” and actually pull it off without even owning machine tools. That’s the modern world for you. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

You can order parts, swap them in, and get decent performance right away. Installation is largely straightforward. It’s truly remarkable.
It’s almost like factory options now, and in a way, that’s wonderful. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

And then there are enthusiasts (is that term outdated?) out there making and selling hyper-niche items, which is even more surprising.

People are making copies of racing parts by hand-machining them…

Wheel conversion kits and all\u2014the dedication is incredible. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

I can’t always judge the quality of what’s being sold, but the market has opened up, users can access things more easily, and horizons have broadened. That’s a good trend. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

You have to understand the balance between mass-produced parts and custom one-off fabrication labor.
For example, if you developed and built a smartphone just for you, how much would it cost?
Probably an astronomical figure.
The more units produced, the lower the per-unit cost becomes. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Caliper supports are a prime example.
An inexpensive one might cost around \u00a510,000 for a pair, but if you fabricated it as a one-off, depending on the design, it could easily cost five to six times that or more.
These days, it’s become normal to easily get your hands on flashy items.
On the flip side, that means everyone ends up making the same choices, which is a bit disappointing. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

I find myself thinking daily that it might be more interesting to make slightly bolder choices\u2014ones that aren’t so safe.
