Cutting here, welding there, sparks flying \u2606\u2014have you ever seen a frame that looks amazing, or maybe you haven’t? Ever had that experience?

Once you cut the frame, there’s no going back.
If you weld something to the frame without thinking ahead, there’s no going back either.
If you don’t think through your bike’s future, you need to give cutting and welding a lot of careful thought first. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

To be honest…
cut marks and weld marks?
“You can just paint over them thick and nobody will know.” Real talk.
Sure, people say it’s about function, not whether the weld looks pretty… but still. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Hidden or not, clean work done with real care is definitely better… maybe.

With semi-automatic no-gas welding… piling it on thick. Oh, piling it on thick.
It’s easy to add, but removing it is a pain.
TIG welding might be the same story. Ever had that experience where you think, “This reinforcement and boss\u2014what do we do with it? I hate having to remove it”?

I think there’s actually a story and drama hidden in that unseen effort.
For example:
\u2022 A round boss welded to a round pipe, fitted perfectly so they match up smoothly before welding
\u2022 A round boss placed against a round pipe and all the gaps filled in with weld buildup <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Whether the customer notices this difference, whether they understand it… probably not.
Most likely they won’t care and won’t even notice.
There probably won’t be any major functional problems either. Plus, once you slap on a thick paint coat, it all disappears anyway. In a way, everything’s fine.

The work of a sharp shop or machine shop\u2014even staring at it closely, you can feel the beauty and effort in it, and you can sense that care coming through.
The fact that you have to step back to really see it might be a sign of that story.

I want people to know about that process, but…
I sometimes tell customers, “You should understand that anyone who looks closely at weld marks and cut marks isn’t exactly normal.”

Even if two bikes look the same at first glance, the story and feelings that went into finishing them are actually different.
You can’t quantify that, and ironically, it seems more efficient not to put your heart into it.
But I think you should really think twice before casually cutting and welding.
Is it really okay to cut? Is it really okay to weld?
Maybe you don’t need to think that hard about it, but I hate the idea of regretting it later\u2014”Oh, I wish I hadn’t cut that” or “Oh, I wish I hadn’t welded that.”
