The category of “classic motorcycle” is really hard to pin down, isn’t it?
If you’re the age group that loved that bike when it was current, does it feel less real?

I’d like to say “it’s not that sweet!” but if this reaches even a little bit to those of you casually thinking about buying a classic, that’s enough. <\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

First and foremost, whether you “like or dislike” that particular bike is the foundation.
If your mindset is just “it was cheaper than market price,” when troubles pile up your wallet gets lighter and your heart breaks. Or maybe it doesn’t break\u2014maybe that’s something you need in life. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

If you don’t know the bike’s history, be careful.

The dealers selling them know too. They know why this one is a little cheaper than market price.
It’s what you’d call a problem vehicle.
When something’s fundamentally unfixable, the business move is to drop the price\u2014that’s how commerce works.
There’s a high chance the feeling behind it is “you understand, right? You can handle it, right?” <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Is expensive always better? Honestly, that’s debatable too.
Cheap and good basically doesn’t exist, but expensive and bad does. Without a good eye, you might be in trouble. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The best thing is knowing who the previous owner was\u2014that’s the most reassuring.
A bike with zero issues, hands off the handlebars? That’s only new bikes and nearly-new bikes. Everything else loses life points on each part as time and mileage pass, so at some point repairs and replacements become essential. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the end, it’s the “you chose this boat” problem.
It happens a lot\u2014the boat you picked and the captain turned out to be bad. Honestly, with a 40\u201350 year old bike, five or ten previous owners is pretty much a given.
Finding one that’s accident-free, never dropped, and garage-kept is astronomically unlikely. In other words, risk comes as part of the package. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

How much affection you can muster.
In bad cases, it’s like whack-a-mole\u2014failures pop up everywhere.
The engine head, cases, crankshaft\u2014all shot.
The frame is crumbly with rust, so it’s better to use something else as a base instead of fixing it.
You might think “that won’t happen,” but think about the risks of a 40\u201350 year old bike. It might be pretty likely. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

I’ve been telling scary stories, but if nothing’s wrong, it’s just a bike that runs normally.
Think about it carefully. When it was new, this bike was exported all over the world.
It’s such a tough, robust machine that it could handle even the harshest conditions, which is why it still exists today. <\/p>\n\n\n\n


So what’s really the hard part?
I think fixing and maintaining your bike isn’t hardship so much as effort\u2014it’s the accumulation of wanting to make it better, to improve it.

When it runs smoothly again, all that painful time pays off. That’s why we own and keep riding them, isn’t it? Looking at your bike’s Instagram during the day and smiling to yourself.
That’s what fuels the motivation.
