I’ve been getting a lot of people saying their engine won’t start lately.
Honda owners often find it’s the kill switch…
Or sometimes the battery is just weak\u2014these cases are surprisingly common. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

When something breaks, our minds oddly tend to see the motorcycle as “incredibly delicate.”
Machines are actually built extremely robustly through a combination of “delicate and bold” engineering.

But there’s always something that becomes a weak point when it gets hit\u2014I think that’s true of everything. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

For electrical issues, why not grab a multimeter and check it out?
A multimeter might sound complicated, but a pocket multimeter works just fine.
Cases that require an oscilloscope to understand are actually quite rare\u2014I’d say they almost never come up.

I use Hioki test equipment for everything.
There are cheaper options out there, but if you can’t trust your measuring instruments absolutely, you won’t get anywhere.
I think it’s worth not skimping on these few thousand yen. They rarely fail and you can use them reliably for years. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Basically, if you just check voltage and continuity, you should be able to figure out most problems on older bikes.
How many volts are coming through and continuity (is it connected)\u2014that’s enough to check the wiring roughly. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

As a trick, you could also use a D-UNIT+. <\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n

I keep saying this, but this thing can provide
\u2022 12V on main power
\u2022 constant power BT 12V
\u2022 constant ground
. If you connect the D-UNIT+ and then supply ON 12V power and ground to the igniter, you’re bypassing the harness, so you can rule out harness problems.
The same goes if you supply ON 12V to the IG coil. Since you’re not going through the harness, you can eliminate causes one by one. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
