The comparison baseline is important. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Have you ever heard someone say, “Wow, it’s so much better now”?
Whether it’s your body or your motorcycle, it’s the same. What matters is the standard of “right now,” “normal,” and “running smoothly.”
You need to know what “running poorly” feels like, but there’s no need to force yourself to learn it. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The bigger the gap between “the present in the past” and “the present now,” the easier it is to feel the difference, I think.
But don’t you sometimes wonder if that’s really what’s happening? <\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

Is it human nature to fall for exaggerated advertising?
Words like “easy” and “amazing” are so appealing that we can’t help but be drawn to them. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

For example, suppose you have a motorcycle with a clogged carburetor that runs poorly or won’t even start. On a scale of one to one hundred, let’s say it’s at level one.
If you spray some carburetor cleaner on it and the engine starts and idles, the level might jump to twenty to forty. Since the difference is twenty to forty times better, that’s dramatic improvement.
It’s the kind of straightforward case where almost anyone can achieve significant results.

But if you look closely, there are still areas for improvement.
Is the synchronization correct?
What about the fuel level?
Can you fine-tune the idle speed even more?
Is there secondary air leakage?
Is the throttle cable stiff?
What about the appearance?
If you refine all these details, you could reach fifty to eighty, or even ninety.
But in the real world, most people are satisfied with a high rate of change and don’t seek further quality once they’ve achieved that. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

I think this applies to every industry.
Is that sense of wonder really genuine?

But there are things in this world\u2014subtle qualities and flavors\u2014that you don’t need to know about.
If you want to pursue them, time and cost are always required.

There’s also something to be said for knowing your own limits. Ignorance is bliss, too.
Understanding human nature might be a necessary principle in life. You always need a strong mind that won’t be swayed by others’ words.
