I got a consultation from an elderly gentleman who gives us vegetables.
“One of my friend’s Monkeys won’t start\u2014what do you think is wrong?” <\/span><\/strong>
*He mentioned the spark plug was replaced but there’s no spark.
I went to pick it up, but it was so small that loading it turned out to be quite the challenge. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

He said “anytime is fine,”
but my schedule fills up quickly, so I’ll get right on it. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Today’s Repair & Diagnosis Log<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/div>

Vehicle: <\/strong> Honda Monkey 50<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Symptom: <\/strong> The mysterious “engine won’t start at all” disease. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Diagnostic Process: <\/strong> Returning to the three fundamentals of engine operation\u2014”good spark,” “good compression,” and “good fuel mixture”\u2014I systematically eliminated each possible cause through troubleshooting. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Culprit: <\/strong> A faulty CDI unit<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Result: <\/strong> The engine successfully returned to a healthy idle with that characteristic “tock-tock-tock” sound! <\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n

First, I’ll look for the wiring diagram. <\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Since I’m not very familiar with it, I need to start by learning about the Monkey. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The wiring is beautifully simple.
So it’s an AC-CDI system. Hmm, I’ll learn as I work through this. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Supply voltage to the ignition coil is abnormally low<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

With the AC-CDI and ignition coil, the primary side is only producing a maximum of AC 11V. <\/strong>That’s not going to work.
Let me check downstream from the coil first. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

It looks like there’s been quite a bit of DIY customization, so I cleaned up what I could. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

“That’s not relevant!” might seem true, but it can subtly become the glasses (reading glasses) that cloud your judgment.
It’s important to methodically eliminate each possibility one by one.

What was crucial here was testing in isolation.
The pickup gap and voltage are both normal and generating properly.
So that means? The CDI unit itself is likely the problem.

Monkey parts are surprisingly affordable… no wonder people get hooked on these!
