Is it hot? Is it cool? And is it already beer season?
Anyway, with the post-Golden Week rush and the coronavirus impact, parts just aren’t arriving at all…

Those days when things would show up the next day or the day after must have been a dream. <\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

Work had stalled because the battery wasn’t arriving.

To start from the beginning, I ordered a Westco, <\/a>but the domestic YB14L-A2 equivalent I was after has a delivery date of July…

Shorai batteries would work too, but they need a dedicated charger…

I was looking around for something recent when I found a really promising battery. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

It looks like a Custom Japan brand battery.
Pro Select Battery <\/a>\u2190 I’ll paste the compatibility link here.

\u2022 AGM construction\u2014the liquid is absorbed into fiberglass.
\u2022 The liquid is gel
\u2022 Impressive two-year warranty
\u2022 Affordable <\/a> \u2190 That makes me a bit nervous, though…

If this battery works out well, we might not need to use Daytona anymore. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

When you open a new battery, it’s good to give it an initial charge.

Modern chargers can show you when it’s fully charged, which is nice. <\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n

A little tangent:

Suzuki 09161-06021-000 plastic spacer (stepped). This is the one used on oil-cooled GSX-R series fairings. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

With this in place, you can get solid fixing and a bit of play (old-school term). <\/p>\n\n\n\n

In general, I think it’s good to try to
\u2022 reduce the number of parts
\u2022 improve serviceability

Don’t you think the switch connectors on Z-series harnesses being under the tank is a pain?

I wish they’d run them into the headlight housing instead.

With such a clean frame, I think you could make a clean, minimal harness and sell it. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The fuel gauge and ammeter aren’t used (they never were), so I’ve kept it clean like this. (They’re hidden under a cover, though…) <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Running too many obscure option power lines could cause problems, so I’ve kept the original connectors that remained as option power. (Two ports.) <\/p>\n\n\n\n

I couldn’t do anything about this wiring, so I was agonizing over how to deal with it… <\/p>\n\n\n\n

So I went with the “cover up the ugly stuff” strategy.

It looks pretty clean now. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

This is a wing-like thing that holds the battery down.

After that, I grabbed it with my bare hand and got burned… Spot welding is sneaky like that. This one’s also made from two types of titanium. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

That’s how it gets fixed in place. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The final fun part\u2014lightening holes… Today was fun too.

Sometimes I accidentally burr it the wrong way and ruin it, so I have to be careful. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

And then I installed it. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

That’s how it turned out. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

This one’s the same drill\u2014drill holes, burr, repeat. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

And then I installed it. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

I kept the ETC simple without too much fuss. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

I think it’s pretty clean now. The battery doesn’t have anything co-fastened to it. (Just the positive and negative terminal connections.) <\/p>\n\n\n\n
