The meter needle snapped clean off.
Should we overhaul the meter?
Or buy a new meter?

The red needle is discontinued, so it’s a tough call.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

After discussing it, we decided to go with a new white one.

We could have gone with a repair if there had been a replacement available.

When you think about what an overhaul even means, there are a lot of painful realities in this world.

For example, when people say engine overhaul, it means different things.
If it’s machine work, I don’t think there’s usually a problem, but…

If it’s a bit older, doesn’t it happen all the time?

Wait, that bearing is discontinued?
Wait, that chain guide is discontinued?
Wait, did third gear even come out?

And so on… if a part isn’t available, you just have to reuse what you’ve got.
Probably.
I think it’s the same whether it’s a carburetor or forks.

It’s rough when you open it up and then get told “it’s not available, so we have no choice but to reuse it.”


Now, I’m not really familiar with meters, but

I don’t think replacement parts or small components are even supplied in the first place.

Please make your own judgment call.

So that’s why we went with a new one.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Has anyone ever had a GSX-R suddenly hit 300 km\/h?

That sudden twang and the needle snaps.

These meters use gears to reverse the rotation direction. When there’s wear in that area and the engagement gets rough,

it can suddenly bite hard.

Since you’re riding, the speedometer cable gets hyper-twisted.

The cable twists and snaps.
\u2193
300 km\/h shows and the meter is done for.

There are other causes too, but I’ve seen this sudden bite happen occasionally.
*I’m not sure if that’s what happened this time, though.

I figured it was probably a standard part and looked for one back in the day, but I couldn’t find it with my own skills. And I didn’t think there was much demand for it either.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When replacing the meter with a new one, it’s better to replace the receiver too.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n

Try loosening the top and bottom of the cowl bracket.

It’s pretty loose.

Loosen the bracket, temporarily fix the cowl, then tighten the bracket\u2014usually that improves the fit a lot.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
