I picked up a new toy the other day, so I’m going to play around with it for a while and use it as a chance to brush up on my machining and fabrication skills. <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

Originally it was a slip-on, so I cut it once, inserted it, and welded it to remake it into a silencer.
Since I had two of them, I made them 60.5 and 50.8 mm diameter for the GS1000S and CB1100 respectively. I also fabricated and welded the mounting brackets. <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n

A surprisingly useful silencer mounting method.
It’s a method of fixing the silencer by making an attachment for a tripod.

Working alone, you can see it up close, but sometimes you want to step back 1 to 2 meters and get a feel for it.
You want to look at it from the front and from the back. This might come in handy for that. I hope it’s helpful as a reference.

I’m going to fabricate a tail pipe using a simple step-joint method.
\u3010Advantages\u3011
\u2022 Straight pipe is all you need for materials
\u2022 You can extend it like building blocks or Lego, so you have flexibility with angles and layout
\u2022 Unlike hand bending, no flame is needed, so it’s safe and requires minimal equipment

\u2022 Cutting is tedious
\u2022 Deburring is tedious
\u2022 Welding is tedious
\u2022 The appearance is a matter of taste
That’s about how it goes. Joining bent pipes is probably more elegant after all. <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n

So I extended it like that, tack-welded it, and the temporary pipe is complete. <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n

Before welding, it still looks clean. <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n

I’m not good at using the positioner, so I rotate it by hand and weld. (Every time.)
The color is kind of gross\u2014it’s got this weird sheen to it. <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n

Next. I cut two collars, bent the pipe, cut a notch with a hole saw, fitted it, and got it ready for welding.

If you cut corners here, you usually fail\u2014that’s from experience. <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n

I’m the type who loves modern conveniences. I decided on the silencer position and fired it up!

I brought over the pipe I tack-welded earlier, marked it at the laser position, then cut and notched it with a hole saw. <\/em>
One-off sounds fancy, but really it’s just fitting to the actual part\u2014which I think is the easiest way, honestly. <\/em> <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n

Then I fabricated the muffler bracket. It’s plain and simple. <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n

Trying to fit it as close as possible. <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n

Pushing it as tight as possible. <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n
\"\"
That’s how it turned out.

This time the SUS304 pipe ended up at T=1mm, and I really felt the difficulty of thin-wall cutting and welding.
*I was tack-welding what I thought was my own work and it shifted more than expected\u2014the kind of pattern that sends you to hell.

Every day is a learning experience.

I like making things because it’s fun, but
\u2022 Financially and time-wise it doesn’t add up.
\u2022 It’s labor, but people compare it to retail prices.
\u2022 Unless it breaks, it stays on the bike\u2014whether the finish is disappointing or great, it’s there forever.
\u2022 How long is the warranty on damage? With retail products people don’t complain, but with one-offs they do?

If you think you can’t do it, it’s better not to try. It’s… dif… fi… cult…
