This beautifully stunning VFR750F Interceptor RC24 came in with several things the owner wanted us to address and modify. <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

We’ve had it in the shop for nearly half a year now, and if we don’t keep chipping away at it steadily, things will get out of hand.

We’re starting with the sidestand, which is the easier part to tackle.
This thing is really long! Part of the problem is that it’s bent at the base of the sidestand.

As we got into it, we discovered why:
\u2022 The muffler needs clearance.
\u2022 The bike’s lean angle needed to be gentler.
So it looks like the original design was a compromise solution. <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n

It sticks out quite a bit, so we’re cutting the sidestand down. We’re carefully measuring the U-shaped section and the inset length, then cutting it. After that, we put it on the lathe and machine it to create the inset.

Next, we bent an SUS304 pipe with a bender, held it up to the bike to check the fit, and\u2014oh no\u2014the bent pipe was going to hit the muffler hard. For a moment there, I thought, “This might be a problem!” and got a little worried.

But with a straight pipe, we could avoid the contact, so I breathed a sigh of relief.

Once we settled on the length and everything else, it was time to weld. We prepped the joint and did a full-circumference weld.
An experienced hand suggested we should add a rotation stop, so we machined in a pin and staked it. <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n

Next, we cut out the sole and welded it on.
These days, SUS304 isn’t too much trouble to cut and weld. But it used to be a real pain. Cutting it, machining it, welding it\u2014nothing went smoothly, and I’d spend a lot of time troubleshooting.
I can totally understand why some bike shops hate working with it. <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n

The sidestand hook\u2014or whatever you want to call it\u2014I try to avoid making it just a plain rod.
I aim for something that’s easy to deploy, looks good, and is as light as possible.

We put a cover over the sole. <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n

It clears the muffler and the angle sits just right\u2014phew! <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n
\"\"
The sole sits flush with the ground. We want to make sure it looks good no matter who sees it\u2014neither the owner nor I want to be embarrassed. <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n

Here’s where we hit a snag. We’ve got another oddball spring with a pretty unusual shape\u2014quite a long neck on it.
I’m not a fan of single springs (safety considerations too), so we can’t just use this one. Off we went on another hunt for a replacement. (Still on hold.)

Honda makes some really good springs. Their spring feel is great, they come with covers, and they’re ahead of the curve. <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n

The owner asked us to put the fender back on, so we just went ahead and installed it\u2014straightforward enough.
