GSX-R750 GR71. We’ve been doing a ton of inspections lately with the new plan. Walking into a motorcycle shop for the first time can feel a bit intimidating. There’s that vibe, you know? Like you might get hit with some dismissive response. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Honestly, even folks in the trade find it hard to walk in. Buying a used bike and needing an inspection is actually a great opportunity. We don’t push you hard on doing this or that\u2014just come by whenever you’re comfortable. <\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

The clutch was slipping, so it wasn’t rideable. But don’t worry\u2014parts are still available.
The GSX-R is getting to be a classic now, but man, the build quality is really something.

That said, Z bikes… I really wonder about them. I can’t shake the image of Z equals helicoil. The ratchet on the shifter pawl\u2014replacing it once in a while can reduce the play during shifts, or so they say, and you get a firmer feel: : : supposedly. *Though we didn’t do it this time. <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n

The generator gear on the back of the clutch\u2014when it’s loose, it can make the idle a bit noisier. But that’s not really abnormal. <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n

The housing looked in good shape, so that was reassuring. <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n

No step wear, nice condition. That’s reassuring. Fewer problems means better efficiency. Maybe it’s just the GSX-R, or maybe the mileage is low. <\/em> <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n

The steel plate was burned. Pretty delicate stuff, really.
Clutches remind me of brakes, actually\u2014disk and pad setup.

I’d guess that back in the day, friction material didn’t grip well, so they used strong springs to clamp it down hard and prevent slipping. Friction material degrades over time\u2014it stops gripping, starts slipping, gets burned.

Since the friction material is soaked in oil, it’s probably worth replacing after a certain number of years. <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n

There was no friction material peeling, but old stuff gets stiff. If it’s never been replaced, a refresh might be worth it. <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n

After that, it’s just a matter of swapping parts\u2014nothing tricky. <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n

When you do a clutch OH and replace the oil sight glass… it feels really nice. <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n

You want to see it, but you can’t… even though there’s fresh oil in there.
You want that feeling you get after an oil change\u2014that ‘yeah, fresh stuff!’ vibe. Ever feel that way? <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n

Now that’s… nice.
A bike where you can get happy about the little details\u2014that’s when the hobby really kicks in, you know? <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n

The GSX-R750 GR71 has this weird oversized oil filter. Even big retailers sometimes say ‘we’ll have to order that.’ We don’t stock it either. It’s pretty alienating, honestly. Poor thing.

But here’s some good news: you can swap the oil filter union for one from another oil-cooled model, and you’re set.

\u2022 The case-side oil filter union pitch is also the same.

Now I can say… my R and Hayabusa use the same filter.
*It’s good to label it with tape or marker so you don’t mix it up. <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n

Since it’s the new inspection plan, oil and oil filter are included. This time we used Newtech NC50 10W-50. <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n

We replaced the tires with Pirelli Sport Demon. Bridgestone used to be good, but lately they’ve been slipping. <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n

We used to replace the air valve every time, but lately there are these nice products like this that we use instead.

They’re more reliable than a regular air valve. Ariete air valve <\/a>
In my opinion, if you make the air valve a different color from the wheel, it’s easier to spot when you’re adding air.
