One more hard hit and it&#8217;s basically goodbye. The question of whether it was in there or not disappears, and you can sleep soundly at night. <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"1280\" height=\"854\" src=\"https:\/\/www.decoboco.info\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/DSC_9177.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-44758\"\/><figcaption>Since it&#8217;s a separate handlebar, we&#8217;re adding an extra stopper. Back in the day, people would often strip the threads and use bolts and nuts to lock it down. <br><br>When you use bolts and nuts as a stopper&#8230; <br>\u2022 There&#8217;s no flat surface on the stem stopper side, so the lock nut doesn&#8217;t grip well = it loosens easily <br>\u2022 It&#8217;s surprisingly thick and doesn&#8217;t allow for flexibility. <br>And so on. <br>In recent years, the final consensus has been that welding a plate to the stopper is the fastest and most reliable way. <br><br>We&#8217;re locking it down to the point where the handlebar lock just barely works. Handlebar locks (steering locks) are checked in inspections these days. Used bikes with customized front ends\u2014watch out! <br><br>It sounds simple to say, but&#8230; <br>Leave the old bearing in \u2192 tack weld the thick plate \u2192 check \u2192 grind \u2192 check \u2192 grind \u2192 remove bearing \u2192 mark with a touch pen \u2192 apply oil and press fit. That&#8217;s the workflow. <br><br>I really think about how much faster and easier it is to service a stock bike&#8230; <br><br><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"1280\" height=\"855\" src=\"https:\/\/www.decoboco.info\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/P1760607.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-44759\"\/><figcaption>The usual gate paint\u2014&#8221;Asahi Pen Oil-Based High-Durability Iron Parts 83ML&#8221;\u2014the small size is really helpful. <br>If the gate gets wet, it should be fine&#8230; <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"1280\" height=\"855\" src=\"https:\/\/www.decoboco.info\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/P1760608.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-44760\"\/><figcaption>The grease is Neutech NC100, as always. <br>I think the quality of chemicals becomes clear when many people use them for years and tens of thousands of kilometers and you get that &#8220;Yeah, it&#8217;s reliable&#8221; result. This grease is truly trustworthy. <br><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"1280\" height=\"855\" src=\"https:\/\/www.decoboco.info\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/P1760609.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-44761\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"1280\" height=\"855\" src=\"https:\/\/www.decoboco.info\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/P1760610.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-44762\"\/><figcaption>Kawasaki&#8217;s characteristic tight seal? has super high friction. It&#8217;s a bit outdated, so we remove it and use parts from other bikes. <br>If you assemble with a seal that grips this tightly, it&#8217;ll probably get sloppy pretty quick. <br><br>We compress the seal quite a bit, so if someone says &#8220;Isn&#8217;t the steering really heavy?&#8221; we loosen it &#8220;somewhat&#8221; and reassemble. <br>At first the seal grips well so play is hard to detect, but after some distance the seal wears out and you get play. <br>We want to make assembly easy and effective too. <br><br>This is just personal experience, so take it as reference. <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"1280\" height=\"855\" src=\"https:\/\/www.decoboco.info\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/P1760611.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-44763\"\/><figcaption>If we have one here, it&#8217;s for Suzuki. The outer lip just barely touches the frame outer diameter. The seal center hole just barely touches the adjustment nut protrusion. <br>This design looks old now too. Honda has been using upper and lower seals for smooth operation for quite a while. <br>Even HRC manuals have items like &#8220;cut the seal lip with a cutter.&#8221; <br><br><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"1280\" height=\"855\" src=\"https:\/\/www.decoboco.info\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/P1760612.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-44764\"\/><figcaption>This protrusion must be pressing on the bearing inner race, so be careful when reusing seals. <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"1280\" height=\"855\" src=\"https:\/\/www.decoboco.info\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/P1760613.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-44765\"\/><figcaption>At first you tighten and loosen, let it break in a bit, and if you feel &#8220;Is the bearing being pressed firmly?&#8221; things move quickly. <br>Roughly speaking, you adjust between &#8220;it won&#8217;t tighten any more&#8221; and &#8220;play starts here.&#8221; Then you add the top bridge and tighten the nut, so there&#8217;s a lot going on&#8230; <br><br>I think steering play is easy to confuse with other things. <br>\u2022 Brake disc pin play <br>\u2022 Brake pad play (especially if you&#8217;ve removed the pad spring) <br>\u2022 Expansion of the caliper&#8217;s pad bore <br>\u2022 Wear on the upright bottom case (the deep part below center; be a bit careful if there&#8217;s no inner metal) <br>\u2022 Damage from disassembling the inverted inner lower bracket or loosened fit. <br>\u2022 Loose race press fit on the frame side (sloppy) <br><br>For example, if a problem comes up and you can confidently say the stem bearing is fine, you can suspect other things and solve it faster, I think. <br><br><br><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"1280\" height=\"854\" src=\"https:\/\/www.decoboco.info\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/DSC_9050.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-44766\"\/><figcaption>Next. The fork is bent, so we&#8217;re disassembling three sets including the damaged one and mixing and matching. <br><br><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"1280\" height=\"855\" src=\"https:\/\/www.decoboco.info\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/P1760469.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-44767\"\/><figcaption>It&#8217;s been a while since I&#8217;ve smelled that sulfur\/hot spring smell. The oil that had turned to sludge\u2014what weight was it? It felt like taking a bath after years. <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"1280\" height=\"855\" src=\"https:\/\/www.decoboco.info\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/P1760616.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-44768\"\/><figcaption>There are places where you have to install a seal and corrosion happens. <br>The same goes for the snap ring groove. If this is rough and pitted, we don&#8217;t force the seal in with &#8220;bang bang!&#8221; If you don&#8217;t remove the corrosion from the snap ring groove, it&#8217;ll invite more rust, so be careful. <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"1280\" height=\"855\" src=\"https:\/\/www.decoboco.info\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/P1760618.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-44769\"\/><figcaption>We ground and smoothed the surface. Assemble parts without forcing\u2014do it smartly. That reduces uncertainty and fewer troubles result. <br>Ideally, a job finishes in one go with no trouble. <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"1280\" height=\"855\" src=\"https:\/\/www.decoboco.info\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/P1760620.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-44770\"\/><figcaption>We hand-polished and corrected the usable inner tube. <br>The stroke area at the front inevitably gets shiny. The fork moves while tilted, so the fork has it tough too. <br>When it&#8217;s mirror-shiny, there can actually be friction&#8230; <br><br>By the way, even if plating wears down to sag, it&#8217;s in the 100-micron range. The inner tube dimension from top to bottom is also 100-micron range. It&#8217;s a long part so some variation shows up. <br>We thought the leak was because the inner diameter wore down, so we ordered a new OEM inner tube and it was thinner than the used one&#8230; <br>How to avoid damaging the oil seal and keep operation smooth is what matters. <br><br><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"1280\" height=\"855\" src=\"https:\/\/www.decoboco.info\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/P1760621.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-44771\"\/><figcaption>Cleaning the cylinder rod threads. If it&#8217;s not held firmly and securely, it causes oil leaks. <br>A little effort gets you peace of mind. <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"1280\" height=\"855\" src=\"https:\/\/www.decoboco.info\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/P1760622.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-44772\"\/><figcaption>It doesn&#8217;t go in this far, but if it threads in by hand, you&#8217;re good. You also need to be a bit careful not to over-tap since the other side wears down. <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"1280\" height=\"855\" src=\"https:\/\/www.decoboco.info\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/P1760470.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-44773\"\/><figcaption>Whether it&#8217;s due to year or&#8230; everything is used so I can&#8217;t tell what&#8217;s what, but there seem to be differences. <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"1280\" height=\"855\" src=\"https:\/\/www.decoboco.info\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/P1760626.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-44774\"\/><figcaption>Anti-dive fork oil lock\u2014a common thing. <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"1280\" height=\"855\" src=\"https:\/\/www.decoboco.info\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/P1760627.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-44775\"\/><figcaption>This is the reverse pattern. <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"1280\" height=\"855\" src=\"https:\/\/www.decoboco.info\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/P1760624.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-44776\"\/><figcaption>This is the oil lock specification. Well, if it&#8217;s not used all the way to full bottom, there&#8217;s no problem. But if you do use it all the way to full bottom, the oil lock goes all floppy. <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"1280\" height=\"855\" src=\"https:\/\/www.decoboco.info\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/P1760629.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-44777\"\/><figcaption>I think the top washer is discontinued, so we&#8217;re reusing it. Domestic forks are either Kayaba or Showa. Forks have surprising versatility and there are parts you can swap. <br>I think the GSXR1100 H-J might have been the same&#8230; <br>You could probably build up the backup ring and it&#8217;d be fine. <br><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"1280\" height=\"855\" src=\"https:\/\/www.decoboco.info\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/P1760631.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-44778\"\/><figcaption>The fork spring is a single-rate from SS Itou. <br>The spring that was being used was unknown, so we decided to reset it for now. <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"1280\" height=\"855\" src=\"https:\/\/www.decoboco.info\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/P1760633.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-44779\"\/><figcaption>The pressurized fork has a bypass hole, so it&#8217;s a bit tricky. We could have welded it shut, but we thought we&#8217;d practice on junk first&#8230; and if buildup happens on the inside it&#8217;d be a pain&#8230; so we decided against it. <br><br>A weird fork that shows the era. The top cap sinks deep inside the inner tube. <br>When we first disassembled it, the oil level was super low? Is it because it&#8217;s a pressurized fork?
