Inspection and Newtech oil exchange, fluid exchange\u2014the bike was running slightly rough, so we went with carburettor maintenance plus OH.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

The bike hadn’t been ridden much lately. The throttle wouldn’t budge at all for a while, then a few days later it came back to life. Scary stuff, so we wanted to check it out. First thing we found: the vacuum cap was missing.

My theory\u2014the vacuum cap flew off, got caught on something, rattled around, fell off, and somehow that fixed it? Yeah, that doesn’t make sense.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n

We found a loose part too\u2014classic BST stuff. When we pulled the tank, something felt off. And the smell…<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n

Ugh! That matcha green color… it reeked of rust and rot, wafting out strong.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n
\"\"
So we moved right into carburettor maintenance\u2014this was shaping up to be straightforward.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n

\"\"
The butterfly valve underneath had some gunk buildup\u2014that’s probably what was stuck initially.
We disassembled it to check that the butterfly shaft moves freely and the return spring has good tension.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n

\"\"<\/figure>\n\n\n\n

All four jets were corroded and clogged with rust deposits. Honestly, I don’t see carburettor clogs much anymore, so this was kind of refreshing.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n

\"\"<\/figure>\n\n\n\n

At first glance,
the MJ, PJ, float valve (float assembly), and NJ all looked shot.

The jets were pretty clogged, so I figured replacement would be better. Even if we clean off the corrosion, it’s so deeply pitted that I’m not sure it’ll function properly.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n

I think about this all the time\u2014work methods keep evolving. Back in the day, you’d spray carburettor cleaner and soak it.
Scrape with a screwdriver. That’s 20th-century thinking now.

Cleaning took forever and never looked great. “That’s just how clogged carbs are!” But honestly, the appearance and performance were always questionable.

These days, we can do an OH so well that there’s no trace of the clog left. It’s a great time to be working on bikes.
