It’s been a while since I could work on my own bike a little.<\/p>\n

\nI didn’t have the budget for a new one, so I hunted down a used piece. The wear on it actually looks pretty good.<\/p>\n

Now, for those of you who love cheap, cheap, cheap\u2014let’s talk about used parts.
\nUsed parts always come with risk.
\nMissing pieces?
\nIs it actually compatible?
\nCould it actually be junk?
\nAnd so on. I can figure things out myself, but customers can’t. (Labor and materials add up.) In the end, you think, “I should have just bought new.”<\/p>\n

But I totally understand how you all feel…
\n“I bought it cheap, so install it cheap for me” \u2192 Sorry, but no. Do it yourself! If I had that kind of time, I’d be working on other customers’ bikes or tinkering with my own.<\/p>\n

I haven’t said it outright, but I’m also not taking new parts from online retailers…
\nBasically…
\nNew parts with defects\u2014we don’t handle warranty claims.
\nWork stopped during a warranty claim\u2014storage fees apply.
\nIt’s rare these days, but it becomes a problem between the seller and the buyer. The company that made 1% profit from the sale, the person who saved 1% by buying cheap\u2014both parties take on responsibility.<\/p>\n

I’ve gone on long enough, but the point is: risk and reward go hand in hand.<\/p>\n

\nThe flange wouldn’t come off, but I figured it would work, so I polished it as-is. Turned out pretty well. *Four pipes<\/p>\n

\nTitanium has a pretty hard surface, so unwanted debris came right off. I even thought it might work on burnt-on vinyl and stuff. (But I’m not trying that…)<\/p>\n

\nI removed the nostalgic Black Edition stock muffler. It’s one of those engines where the 1-4 ports face outward\u2014good or bad, who knows.<\/p>\n

\nI temporarily fitted the exhaust pipe, and now comes the challenge: fabricating the tail pipe.
\nWhen I really thought about it… I don’t have a 60.5mm diameter pipe? It’s already the 30th, and I’ve already torn it apart, so here we go.<\/p>\n

I rummaged through the shop and found a pipe marked “inspection tail pipe” in marker. If I can make this work as a base, I’ll give it a shot.<\/p>\n

\nI laid a towel in front of the bike and stared at it for a while, planning the steps in my head.
\nOnce I had the plan, it was smooth sailing. First, I cut and faced the end, then used an expander to widen it so the 60.5mm pipe fits inside.<\/p>\n

\nIt’s definitely a handy tool. Not too wide, not too tight\u2014that’s the sweet spot.<\/p>\n

\nNext…
\nNo matter how I look at it, I don’t have enough material for the silencer insertion. What do I do?
\nI’ll use pi to fabricate a pipe by rolling sheet metal.<\/p>\n

I determine the outer diameter and cut the sheet to size with a shear.<\/p>\n

\nThen I run it through the three-roll mill, weld it, and it’s done. The fillet radius on the joint is pretty rough\u2014sorry for the amateur work!<\/p>\n

\nIt warped a bit, but it’s suddenly finished. Electropolishing is seriously intense…
\nThat stainless pipe in the photo above. You just apply the chemical and wipe it\u2014the whole process takes about five minutes. I thought we could offer a burn-removal service. (But we won’t.)<\/p>\n

\nI made a larger hook and installed it.<\/p>\n

\nThat’s how it is. I was so happy I took it for a test ride right after.
\nThat “meh?” feeling during acceleration that I had with the stock exhaust pipe and slip-on is gone. It feels like the torque dropped a bit and it’s milder and easier to ride overall.<\/p>\n

Well, with 1100cc, I don’t really mind anyway.<\/p>\n
