The side stand often gets overlooked. You really miss it when it’s not there, and when it’s hard to deploy, you find yourself thinking “ugh!” every time you get on or off\u2014the unsung hero of the bike.<\/p>\n

\nQuick-detach is the best! That’s what you’d expect from a racing model.
\nThe detach base surface aligns with the frame, and the chin hooks into the frame\u2014that’s the structure.<\/p>\n

If you want to make it quick-detach later, you have to do it this way or the bolts will bend.<\/p>\n

\nI cleaned up the base too. It feels like putting on new shoes\u2014nice.<\/p>\n

\nSince we’re fabricating a clutch hose, I drained the fluid and\u2026 there was quite a bit of rust, which was a little scary and worrying.<\/p>\n

\nJust as I suspected. I’m glad I checked. Better safe than sorry.<\/p>\n

\nI’ll polish the body and replace the cup too, so it should operate smoothly.<\/p>\n

\nThe layout is the same, but this is what I’m wrestling with.<\/p>\n

With the top (banjo):
\n\u2717 Passes in front of the sprocket cover bolt
\n\u2713 Does not pass in front of the engine hanger bolt<\/p>\n

With the bottom (fitting):
\n\u2713 Does not pass in front of the sprocket cover bolt
\n\u2717 Passes in front of the engine hanger bolt<\/p>\n

I find myself deliberating over appearance and serviceability like this. You can’t get a feel for it without fitting it to the actual bike, and you can’t confirm whether it’ll interfere with the work path either.<\/p>\n

I think everyone should think carefully before choosing bike parts. When you buy a part fresh and then have to remove it and swap it out again, you think to yourself “ah, so this is how the economy keeps turning\u2026” It’s better to think about what your final setup should be and avoid doing things twice.<\/p>\n

\nThat’s how it turned out.<\/p>\n

\nThe side cover bolts are smooth-slot. They’re aluminum Suzuki genuine racer parts.<\/p>\n

\"\"
\nI’m modernizing the oil filter. The GR71 filter is “huge,” “not sold anywhere,” and “we don’t want to stock it either.”<\/p>\n

All GR71s should have the filter union replaced.<\/p>\n

The exhaust pipe bolts came off without a hitch\u2014relief. I’ll replace those bolts too.<\/p>\n

\nThe thread diameter on the case side and the filter contact surface are the same. (Thank goodness!)
\nJust remove and screw it in.<\/p>\n

\nI remove the thread locker before assembly. You don’t want leftover particles sitting in the oil passages\u2014nothing good comes from that. If you seat it firmly, it won’t come loose.<\/p>\n

\nTime to replace the drain bolt too. When this is clean, it makes a difference in how you feel.
\nI don’t really recommend aluminum for this.<\/p>\n

\nBefore starting the engine, I checked the fuel tank. No rust or debris came out\u2014all good.<\/p>\n

\nThen I filled it with Newtech NC50 10W-50 engine oil, adjusted the carburetors, and we’re done.<\/p>\n
