\nToday we’re going to do some oil-cooled maintenance.<\/p>\n

\nSince the muffler was already off, removing the damper was really easy. The wear looked moderate.<\/p>\n

\nI’ll apply NC100 grease so that even if micro-vibration occurs, the case side won’t wear down.<\/p>\n

\nUsing a later-model damper that isn’t the through-bolt type is necessary.<\/p>\n

\nLet’s clean those hard-to-reach spots thoroughly\u2014you only get the chance once in a while.<\/p>\n

\nLet’s also clean those other hard-to-reach areas and apply rust preventative.<\/p>\n

\nI’ll replace the generator damper. The area under the generator is another spot you only get to access once in a while.<\/p>\n

\nIf you rotate it back and forth, you can feel the play. It’s worn quite a bit.
\nWhen this damper wears down, it gets surprisingly noisy and rattly.<\/p>\n

\nIt was pretty stiff.<\/p>\n

\nThere’s no sprocket cover, and it’s a bit wet, so let’s replace the shift seal and the neutral switch O-ring.<\/p>\n

\nIt comes out easily with our special small sliding hammer.<\/p>\n

\nI’ll remove this one too and replace its O-ring.<\/p>\n

\nLet’s clean this hard-to-reach spot while we’re at it.<\/p>\n

\nNumber 9 is on there. You brought number 8, so let’s swap them.<\/p>\n

\nLike everyone’s, the head cover gets pretty dirty from heat, oil, and mud.<\/p>\n

\nScrubbing it with a small brush at the wash station takes forever and doesn’t get it clean. With a big brush like this, we can blast away aggressively and get it spotless in no time.<\/p>\n

\nI also cleaned up the muffler bracket while I was at it.<\/p>\n

\nI make sure to clean around the bolts too, even if it’s just for show.<\/p>\n

\nI also polished the right cover nicely.<\/p>\n

I got so caught up in all this that I forgot to photograph inside the head cover. There was hardly any scoring though\u2014it looked good.<\/p>\n

\nI’m swapping the exhaust pipe bolts from stainless to iron. Rather than worry about galvanic corrosion or loosening, the real issue is that if they rust and seize, they’re a pain to remove. With iron bolts, even if they seize, the hole strips easily, which is a lifesaver.<\/p>\n

\nI’ll sync the carburetors and we’re done.<\/p>\n

It’s currently waiting for a test ride.<\/p>\n
