\nWe’ll start work on the steering stem. Bearings lose their lubrication over time, which causes rust and poor operation. It’s a good idea to disassemble and inspect them once to see their condition, and replace them if they’re worn.<\/p>\n

\nYou need to visually confirm that the races are seated fully and deeply. Press them in gently so the frame doesn’t bear unnecessary stress.<\/p>\n

\nAfter installing the races, check the seal effectiveness with your finger. Some bikes have seals that work very well. It’s important to understand this now so you won’t wonder about it later during adjustments.<\/p>\n

\nSteering adjustment is interesting\u2014manufacturers actually recommend different settings. It’s not based on displacement, weight, or shaft diameter, but rather each manufacturer has its own recommended values.
\nThere’s debate about excessive lightness in handling. Of course, bearings aren’t done once assembled\u2014as you ride, they settle in and may need readjustment, and they’ll need fresh lubrication. Sometimes that settled-in state is actually the best condition.
\nIf bearings were more expensive parts, they’d be treated more carefully. Because they’re relatively affordable, there’s a tendency to think you can just replace them when they fail.<\/p>\n
