So here’s the GSF1200 that came in for inspection the other day \u2605
\nWe’ve had quite a long relationship with this one, haven’t we

It’s a really clean machine.

Nobody asked me to, but let me check out the old front maintenance work \u2605

The GSF has a plastic cap on top of the seal
\nBack then I didn’t know any better, so it just stayed as is.
 
\n
 
Here it is!

Whoa! Tapered roller bearings!
\nThey’re a bit yellowed, but both the top and bottom are holding up nicely.
\nThe preload feels a bit high to the touch, but that’s probably just age.
\nWe cleaned both top and bottom thoroughly, re-oiled and adjusted them for better performance \u2605

Now for the main event
 
\n
 
The oil condition is so-so
 
\n
 
I ran both the OEM and SKF inner tubes through with metal-rubber lubricant to check their operation \u2605
\nSure enough, they move smoothly.
\nI want them to work well \u2605, sure,
\nbut what I really want is for them not to leak, which is why I’m testing this SKF now.
\nSpot rust shows up on pretty much all of them\u2014once rust appears, there’s not much you can do.
\nSo when someone says “I don’t want it to leak, so replace the inner tube!” …
\nIf it does leak, I usually cover the parts cost and do it a few times,
\nbut it can get surprisingly involved! That’s the thing.
