“HIGASHIYA,” a shop located along the Meguro River
\nI’m pretty sure I passed by last winter, but it looked so hard to enter that I just walked on by.
\nI just peeked through the one small window in the photo and that was it.
\nBut today was different! I actually managed to go inside. \u266a
\nThe interior is designed with space in mind, and it doesn’t feel like a shop that sells Japanese sweets at all.
\nThe stick-shaped mochi cakes don’t even look like candy. Wait, are they chopsticks? I was totally confused.
\nThe beautifully made sweets are displayed simply, and then wrapped neatly in clean paper.
\nWhat really impressed me was that despite their size and reasonable price, they’re nice enough to give as a gift without feeling embarrassed.
\nThe box is compact and works whether you place it vertically or horizontally.
\nThis is really well thought out. You couldn’t do this with cake.
\nThe sweetness is restrained and the texture is soft. It doesn’t have that hard, heavy image of traditional Japanese sweets. It’s light and fluffy.
\nAnd the single-bite varieties have an adult flavor with a hint of alcohol.
\nYou could say this is the evolution of Japanese sweets.
