{"id":81846,"date":"2008-07-11T17:08:08","date_gmt":"2008-07-11T08:08:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.decoboco.info\/en\/?p=81846"},"modified":"2026-09-24T13:41:19","modified_gmt":"2026-09-24T04:41:19","slug":"crash-and-burn","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.decoboco.info\/en\/20080711\/everyday-events\/crash-and-burn","title":{"rendered":"Crash and Burn"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/www.decoboco.info\/wp-content\/uploads\/imp\/674393_55838311_3.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/www.decoboco.info\/wp-content\/uploads\/imp\/674393_55838311_4.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/www.decoboco.info\/wp-content\/uploads\/imp\/674393_55838311_5.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<p>I dug up some photos.<br \/>\nSad photos.<br \/>\nBrake fluid was seeping from the rear reservoir tank, and there were no problems during the morning ride.<br \/>\nI thought I could just wipe it with a tissue and be fine\u2014but no way!<br \/>\nOn acceleration, the rear slid out dramatically from an almost straight line.<br \/>\nMy slow reaction made me think &#8220;whoa,&#8221; and I just opened the throttle more.<br \/>\nThen the rear snapped back to center and locked up\u2014lock to lock.<br \/>\nHuman strength can only hold on for a few seconds, and while I was getting tossed around going &#8220;aaah,&#8221; I crashed.<br \/>\nOh no\u2014just as I thought that, smoke! Fire! It was burning!<br \/>\nNo good! Never mind the impact of the crash\u2014dash, dash, dash!<br \/>\nThe fire coming from under the tank was helmet-sized and showed no sign of going out.<br \/>\nThe marshal was waving a yellow flag yelling &#8220;get back, get back!&#8221;<br \/>\nWhen I slapped the fire with my gloves, I just fanned the flames and made it burn even hotter.<br \/>\nHmm? This is bad.<br \/>\nI yelled &#8220;fire extinguisher!&#8221; at the marshal.<br \/>\nAnd they shouted back &#8220;we don&#8217;t have one!&#8221;<br \/>\nWhat?<br \/>\nI thought for a few seconds.<br \/>\n1) Escape to safety as is<br \/>\n2) Wait for the fire truck<br \/>\n3) Uh&#8230;<br \/>\nSo I tried throwing sand from the ground at it.<br \/>\nAnd what do you know\u2014it weakened! This is it! This is the way!<br \/>\nI kept throwing sand, and just as the fire was nearly out, a fire truck showed up with an extinguisher.<br \/>\nWith a &#8220;whoosh&#8221; and pink smoke, the fire went out. Thank goodness, thank goodness.<br \/>\nBut it wasn&#8217;t over yet\u2014I had ridden there under my own power.<br \/>\nI went to the control tower and they let me wash the bike, but it didn&#8217;t get clean at all.<br \/>\nThe engine started fine\u2014voltage was good!<br \/>\nLever half-broken, pedal half-broken, handlebars all wonky\u2014what do I do with this?<br \/>\nBut I was confident I could get it moving and make it home, so I went to the Ducati team and borrowed some tools.<br \/>\nSorry, I crashed a bit ago, and I need to borrow some tools.<br \/>\nSomehow, sadly, I made it back to the shop.<br \/>\nAIM meter damaged, single seat broken, silencer trashed, chrome tank all dented up.<br \/>\nAnd that adds up to tens of thousands of dollars in repairs.<br \/>\nThe Kangaroo one-piece suit and gloves are about to get holes in them too.<br \/>\nAt least I didn&#8217;t get hurt.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I dug up some photos.
