I purchased the National Food Waste Processor MS-N21 at the end of July 2007 and this is a status report through the end of September\u2605
\nI know some of you guys who don’t cook are probably thinking, “Who would actually use something like this?” Well, you can skip this\u2605
\nTo all you married folks and people who do the cooking:
\nHow do you handle food waste like fish scraps, meat trimmings, and vegetable peels?
\nWell, normally you just throw it out on trash day. But how do you store it until then?
\nThat garbage…
\nBefore, I’d just ignore it, tie up the garbage bag, and stash it in a dead space by the front door. But summer was rough\u2605
\nWhen you look inside the bag, fruit flies go “bzzzz!” “bzzzz!” If the bag is tied up it’s okay, but if it’s still in the trash can
\nthey’re flying around inside, so you spray “Roach Jet” in the bag, grab it, and shake it “shake shake” like
\nthat.
\nI hated the smell and the fruit flies, and I kept thinking, “What if cockroaches start showing up?!”
\nBeing a National fan, that’s what led me to purchase the Food Waste Processor MS-N21\u266a
\nOkay, enough with the long introduction\u2014what really matters is how it works when you actually use it, right?
\n\u3010Pros\u3011
\nWith one processing cycle per day, food waste disappears from our house! It typically reduces to about 1\/10 to 1\/5 of the original volume.
\nNo need to store food waste! Just toss it in right after cooking\u2605
\nAfter processing, you can throw it away or, like me, use it as fertilizer for houseplants.
\nHigh processing capacity\u2014it can handle 1 kg\/3 liters per cycle (though I never fill it that much!)
\nIt’s compact, so it doesn’t take up much space!
\n\u3010Cons\u3011
\nThe processing noise is a bit loud! It sounds like a motorcycle brake being dragged\u2014that kind of grinding noise\u2605
\nThat’s the kind of sound it makes. The manual says to avoid wet things, large pieces, and hard items, but…
\nI use them anyway.
\nTwo boiled eggs in their shells\u21d2Processed without issue
\nLarge chicken leg bone\u21d2Processed without issue
\nTofu\u21d2Processed without issue
\nWet tea leaves\u21d2Processed without issue
\nOne whole eggplant\u21d2Processed without issue
\nFish bones (mackerel, horse mackerel)\u21d2Processed without issue
\nSo it can handle all kinds of things! But!
\nProcessing hard items makes it even louder, so be careful\u2605
\nIt’s best to run it when you’re away from home.
\nSome areas offer subsidies for these, so taking advantage of that is a great deal\u2605
\nAfter buying it and using it, what I thought was…
\nWhy didn’t I buy this sooner? That’s all I can say. If you have a bit of extra money, it’s a highly recommended product\u2605
