As I say every time! I hate long holidays.
\nPeople tell me I should take time off like everyone else, but there’s always something that needs to be done before the holiday, or something that has to get done during it…
\nAll sorts of things!
\nWhat’s the problem? Most manufacturers are closed, so even small parts don’t come in, and we’re stuck\u2014sometimes bikes end up hospitalized.
\nThere are times when I can’t focus on the work I want to do… “Human behavior is fascinating…”
\nObserving it is surprisingly interesting and teaches me a lot about myself.
\nLike animals, people want to keep their personal space, so they tend to avoid standing too close to strangers.
\nWe have a mahjong table here, so there are four pretty fancy chairs, and nearby there are books and magazines.
\nSay two strangers sit down there. Whether I introduce them or not depends on my mood.
\nEven when I do introduce them, conversation surprisingly doesn’t happen.
\n“Top 3 Interesting Behaviors”
\nNumber 3: Staring at me for no reason.
\nI’m watching their behavior from the gaps in the cowl or engine, and when I look over… they’re just blankly staring.
\nIf they’re interested, they should come closer to look. If they have questions, they should ask.
\nBut they’re not really doing anything\u2014they’re just vaguely watching the work…
\nNumber 2: For some reason, they escape to the big chair.
\nMy desk chair apparently cost 800,000 or 900,000 yen back then? The chair design is so cool! I love the chair.
\nBut since space is limited, I try not to look at it too much.
\nAnyway, I digress…
\nI’m not even working on the vehicle of the person sitting in that chair, but they come over and stare at me for no reason…
\nDo they really hate being close to a stranger that much?
\nNumber 1: Wandering around inside and outside the shop.
\nThis is the most common! No interest at all\u2014wandering here, wandering there, staring intently at bikes they don’t care about.
\nThey stare for minutes on end\u2014their behavior is extremely suspicious. Even when I tell them to sit and wait, they can’t!
\nWhy do I have to tell them the estimated completion time and calm them down?
\nPeople I think are capable are those who have a strong sense of self.
\nFor example, people who can spend time without bothering anyone, even when my hands are full.
\nThey read a paperback they brought, manage their planner, borrow a PC to get things done\u2014they use their time meaningfully.
\nPeople in the generation approaching 40 are really good at this, and I admire them.
\nWhat’s even more interesting is that people around 20 can do it too! That’s a mystery to me…
\nI know I’m being presumptuous, but I observe people like this wherever I go…
\nAnd I really love catchphrases! People have habits and repeat the same things over and over.
\nYou want to be grounded, don’t you?
\n“The more a rice plant bears, the lower it bows”\u2014that’s what I was taught long ago. I was told to be interested in everything.
\n“A guardrail isn’t born a guardrail!”
\nHonestly, at first I thought, “What are you even talking about? Huh?” But now I really use that lesson.
