Rotating bearings\u2014that’s what we call bearings.
\nSurprisingly, not many people replace or even inspect bearings here, right?
\nIf you leave them alone, things can get really scary, so watch out!!
\nWe recommend replacing them around 20,000 kilometers.
\nThe photo above is an example of a failed bearing. Vehicle: ZRX1100, mileage: 27,000 kilometers.
\nThe other day, the owner said “there’s a strange noise,” so I took it for a test ride. When I rev it up with a “vroom,” I hear a “clicking” sound.
\nThere’s an abnormal noise coming from the rotating parts\u2014I could confirm it was a metallic sound, so I narrowed it down to two likely culprits.
\nFront sprocket area issues or wheel bearing problems\u2014those two.
\nDo you know how to check for play in a bearing while it’s mounted on the frame?
\nThe explanation is tedious, so I’ll skip the details. It looks like the grease had completely dried up and failed.
\nEven with sealed bearings, grease can leak out and water can get in. Since this is a discarded bearing, I removed the seal.
\nI want you to see the difference in the amount of remaining grease inside.
\nInterestingly, some manufacturers don’t even use sealed bearings, so check them when you change your tires.
