I was surprised by the quality inside \u2013 it’s truly THE classic bike. <\/h2>\n\n\n\n

THE 630! This time we’re swapping the chain size to 525.
Sunstar now has the 525 as a standard option, so we went with that.

The drive sprocket nut is also loose,
and the bolt at the bottom right of the sprocket cover is broken and stuck in there.

I’m thinking about how thoroughly to tackle this. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

When chain oil is caked on like this,
the only way is to soak an old rag in wash oil and wipe it down.

Oil works best on oil, I think.
Once you’ve wiped most of it off, scrub it with an old toothbrush
and finish by spraying parts cleaner. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Even though it’s original? The caliper center isn’t aligned. <\/h2>\n\n\n\n

That’s actually a pretty common Z thing.
There are discs with subtle offset differences, so it’s tricky.
We’re putting this issue on hold for now and moving forward with other work. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Is the rear brake so corroded that it’s not even working? <\/h2>\n\n\n\n

I was going to drain the fluid to overhaul the rear caliper, but nothing came out.
I thought something was wrong, and when I removed the bleeder, it was completely clogged with rust.

Iron bleeders rust easily and seize up often, so
we always use titanium for these. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

It’s been ridden hard! This Z1R is basically a restoration project. <\/h2>\n\n\n\n

It’s in pretty rough shape.
At this rate, the rear brake master cylinder definitely needs an overhaul too, and the brake hoses themselves might be shot.

We wet-blasted it and it cleaned up pretty well.
The caliper paint is basically weak, so we blasted it generously.

The aluminum caliper body is also corroding, and the seal grooves are a bit rough.

The pistons had some rust, but we wet-blasted them clean.

For all motorcycles, hub bearings with double-sided seals are the way to go. <\/h2>\n\n\n\n

I think OEM motorcycles use single-sided seals quite a bit.
Honestly, you almost never end up re-greasing them later.

We’d really appreciate it if wheel bearings could use double-sided seals.
After all, the grease doesn’t get all sticky like in this photo.
We prefer motorcycles that stay as un-sticky as possible. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

I want wheel bearings to spin as light as possible, so I’m in the “non-contact fan” <\/strong>camp.
The “not a drop of grease outside” crowd <\/strong>prefers contact bearings.

I think either way is fine. The difference honestly isn’t that dramatic. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sprockets are Sunstar steel! Size is 525. <\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Sunstar really puts effort into Z brakes and chain sprockets.
This 525 chain size is interesting too.

There are chain size options, but we picked this partly because you can choose the front and rear tooth counts from the catalog.
The final drive is fun to tinker with. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Did they not use lock nuts back then?
Basically everything is held with lock washers.

Both serviceability and appearance suffer, so I try to avoid them.
I prefer motorcycles that work smoothly.

This is going to be a long project,
but if we finish each component beautifully, the final result should be beautiful too. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The muffler gets in the way, or the contact area on the receiver is narrow, and I bet a lot of people have had their hearts skip a beat.

This is a Daytona stand receiver, but you can also use it for a J-trip.
*To be precise, it’s slightly thinner. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Even with a low muffler, you can definitely lift it.
