Standing the fuel tank up to work on it is surprisingly difficult.
I lay down cardboard and lean it against the toolbox,
keeping it in place with the super heavy toolbox\u2014that’s the best method I’ve found so far.

When I drain out the rust remover the results are pretty good! <\/strong>
Since rust removal isn’t my main job,
I’m happy with just getting it clean enough that it doesn’t overflow <\/strong>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

When I rinse the inside of the tank with running water, rust fragments come pouring out with a clattering sound. . . <\/strong>

This rust image is from around the fuel cock area.

Maybe because it’s wet, it looks unusually swollen. <\/strong>
Most of it looks like scabs or burnt spots, <\/strong>still clinging on thickly.
The area around the breather is also quite rusty,
so I want to shake it a bit more and give it another go. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

I bought a small heater from Amazon last year. <\/a><\/strong>
I got it specifically for rust removal, but I was surprised at how well it works <\/strong>.
The display is “Fahrenheit only,” <\/strong>so it’s a bit hard to read, but the controls are simple and it’s really great.

Since it’s about the size of a thumb, it honestly can’t heat things up that much, <\/strong>but
it generally maintains around 20 degrees Celsius <\/strong>.
It has to be small to fit through the filler cap, so I can’t heat the inside otherwise\u2014it’s really useful. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

I bought both 10W and 20W versions, but I can’t really tell if there’s a big difference.
According to the box, a 30W version exists too, but it doesn’t seem to have arrived in Japan yet.
Since it’s not stocked domestically, it’s better to order in advance if you want one.

The image showed a three-prong plug, but mine came with a two-prong, so I think it should work fine with a standard Japanese outlet.
