Overwhelming Performance! Makita Lawn Mower “40V” vs “18V” Comparison – “40vMAX is Excellent”

This is a super popular Makita topic (‘Д’)
Last year, I got frustrated and switched to 40Vmax(lawn mower and split motor string trimmer)
This time, since the timing was right, I did a usage comparison between 18v and 40vMAX.


In terms of performance, speed, and smoothness,the 40vMAX is undoubtedly the clear winner.
I’d like to explain this briefly, concisely, and in summary.

18v/40vMAXlatest lightweight models

MLM330D (18v) and MLM004G (40Vmax)

The cutting width isMLM004G (40Vmax)+100mmslightly larger.
When comparing,it’s about a size larger.

I’ll do a numerical comparison focusing on 40vMAX

• Weight+4.6kg 　
• Width+85mm　
• Length90～105mm

With this size, there’s minimal change in storage space,and the weight? is easy to handle, so I don’t really feelthat it’s gotten heavier.
*Since it’s already large and heavy to begin with, it’s not a concern.

What I felt using MLM004G (40Vmax)

• Full torque with the motorcontinuing to cut without stopping
• Even when cutting at a low height all at once, it doesn’t stop (saves time by finishing in one pass even if grass has grown)
• The battery lasts really well (BL4040) – 100 tsubo is no problem at all*As per Makita’s specifications
• The grass collection box also has a large capacity

“Grass has grown tall” “I want to finish as quickly as possible” “I want to work without stress”
For those people, absolutelyMLM004G (40Vmax)is easier.
Honestly, once you use 40V,the 18V is too much of a hassle to use.That’s how powerful it is.
Finishes in one pass even if it’s grown. *Please do the finishing by hand (*´ω｀*)

However, the 40vMAX battery is super expensive.

What I felt using MLM330D (18v)

• Lightweight and compact size
• This is it for 18V users!
• No torque at all *You need to cut without lowering the rotation speed
• You need to gradually lower the cutting height to work (you have to make many passes)
• Since you have to make many passes, battery replacement is essential

With this,dealing with grass that’s grown over 50mm is a hassle.
If you try to cut it all at once,the motor stops from the load.Since you gradually lower the cutting height,you have to make many passes.
In summer, you might have to split the work over several days.

If you’re someone who mows frequently every day, this would be fine.
However,I think it’s better to keep it to around 60 tsubo.*Beyond that, it’ll probably become a hassle…

Fold the handle and remove the grass collection box, and“the only differences are width and weight”

The handle is also“horizontal”making it very easy to hold.
When storing it upright, the larger size also provides better stability.

The only concern isthe 40Vmax battery, isn’t it…
Also, there’s a brother model MLM003G with a cutting width of 380mm.
Since the size and weight are almost the same,this MLM004G is the standard.

Though unconventional,you can also use it for“weed control”.
In my personal opinion, I should havebought the 40vMAX from the start.
*By the way,string trimmers are swung around, so the 18V’s lightness and compactness really shine.
