When I looked outside this morning, everything was 100% frozen solid… completely (*’ω’*)
I ended up walking there anyway.
My boots have rubber soles, but the tread is pretty shallow, so I had to walk carefully and gently.
I could have taken the day off, but since it’s within walking distance…
Even with all the ice, flat ground isn’t really that much of a problem. As long as you stick to the worn paths, you’re fine.
But steep slopes and hills require serious caution.
As I was walking to the shop this morning, I saw people who looked like they were commuting—riding mama-chari bikes (no electric assist) at high speed.
That’s just… madness.
The ground is a weapon.
Why a bicycle at all?
I could understand it if they were on a mountain bike with a block tread pattern, but with those thin, shallow-grooved tires, the brakes won’t even grip, and if you slip, it’s instant disaster.
Maybe they were trying to avoid train and bus delays or crowding?
If the risk is high, staying home is the better choice.
Put the “injury risk” on one side of the scale and “the possibility of making it to work or school safely” on the other. I think the balance is completely off.
Praise like “they came to work despite all this hardship” is actually pretty rare, and you risk bruises or fractures that leave you short-staffed, plus reduced performance for days or weeks afterward.
I bet a lot of people are starting the new year thinking “this is the worst.”
We have service appointments booked for tomorrow too. I’m not going to make any announcements, but honestly, I think pushing it back a week would be better.
The front of the shop only gets afternoon sun, so it’s still rock solid with ice.
Where you place your priorities matters. Avoiding unnecessary risks is the key to living life at a relaxed pace.
