Z900RS (Z1) Inspection: From Non-Running to Service

Komozawa Avenue… what a crowd!
Well, for some reason Kawasaki air-cooled Z-series bikes keep showing up.

For example, if we were opening a new shop, a shop with just Z1R and GS1000S might become trendy… or maybe not?

I’d like to give you a work estimate, but there are quite a few things that concern me.

The bearings are original equipment too… especially the front was pretty sloppy, so we’ll replace those.

The hub damper is stiff too, so we’ll replace that.

Kawasaki parts are expensive compared to Suzuki, aren’t they?

Well, it’s pretty dirty. I haven’t seen a seal-less setup in a long time…

The hub collar is covered in it too… I try to avoid anything that looks oily or greasy and aim for clean machine building, which I think is important.

I’ll measure the distance collar and label it with P-TOUCH.

You can tell from the press-fit area which is the reference and which is for adjustment.
It’s surprisingly well thought out.

The hub is in pretty bad shape too… When warmed up, liquid drips out.

I’ll do some polishing that can only be done when the bearings are out.

If we finish each part cleanly, maybe that care will come through?

The person assembling it will think, “Mmm, this feels nice.” Future work might be easier too.

We went with a double-sided non-contact seal for a clean look.

Some craftspeople with strong preferences use contact-type seals to completely eliminate any oil weeping…

I thought we might be able to use something interchangeably, but… the oil hole position is offset.
They really do sweat the details.

The front is the same. This one was pretty sloppy too.
17mm is a bit thin, isn’t it?

Compared to the 15mm on the GS1000 and GSX1100S, it’s better, but…

Since we’re replacing the muffler, I’ve ordered a damper for that too.

That’s how it is.

I considered painting this too, but decided that light polishing alone looks more original.

I did a light finish with barrel polishing.

That’s how it is.
