This time it’s the frame.
Lately I’ve been thinking about wheel bearings and swingarm and linkage bearings.
Wheel bearings tend to be overlooked—you’d notice if they don’t move or feel stiff—
but increased play is easy to miss.
Wheel bearings that fall apart from grease starvation are less common these days, but bearings with lots of play
are surprisingly common, so it’s something to watch out for.
Then there’s damage to the bearings and sleeves around the swingarm and linkage.
Sometimes when you remove one for some reason, the grease is mixed with rust and brown, and the sleeve has roller marks on it…
The swingarm and linkage don’t move much—they just keep going back and forth in the same spot—so the same area
starts to wear.
I usually don’t bother taking photos of this area, but it can get pretty rough… (I’ll take some next time.)
When a new bike is delivered, the grease is really minimal, so you want to oil deep into the bearings.
And if you tighten it so it moves smoothly up and down with no play side to side, it’ll be in excellent condition ★
