Recently, I’ve been looking at high-mileage bikes,
and some of them are making noise
but it’s not the tappets or cam chain.
Sometimes the primary reduction makes a grinding or squeaking sound, but that repair is expensive, so—
Blind spot! Generator lock nut looseness and generator damper wear.
Aha!
The generator nut is locked in place with a punch at three spots, so it shouldn’t come loose,
but it does loosen and the gears rattle.
The damper wears out and rattles too.
Quite a noisy engine.
So here’s the thing:
We’re adding generator repair to the service.
That’s lock nut replacement, damper replacement, and O/R installation replacement.
It’s a bit involved, but the bike will run much better.
The old option with oil change was a losing proposition no matter how you looked at it, so we’re dropping that.
