Gear position indicator installation

 

 
Another mysterious item was installed!
It’s a device that tells you what gear you’re in.
Seems like it was acting up.
Since the undercowl is being installed, the owner is working hard on it.
But nothing seemed to work.
If only we had the manual to check…
After shaving the cowl and fabricating a bracket, it still wasn’t done.
Looking at the wiring diagram, maybe it’s not that color wire but this one?
It fired right up with a “brrrrrr” sound. Nice!
It seems like a pretty good product.
It picks up the engine speed signal, calculates it, and determines the gear.
Same method as AIM meters.
Back in the day, there were mechanical ones with sensors attached to the shift drum.
Once the wiring is done, we need to teach it the gears, so we lift the rear wheel and run through gears 1 to TOP while increasing engine speed.
And that’s it, all done.
Whether it’s necessary or not is up to the owner.
I actually don’t mind this kind of thing.
