After grabbing a bite to eat,
I’m heading to the University of Tokyo… It’s the Marunouchi Line, Hongo 3-chome station.
Here’s my favorite spot, the University Museum.
This exhibition is “Himalaya Hot Spot—Fifty Years of the University of Tokyo’s Himalayan Plant Survey”
The University of Tokyo has been researching plant diversity in the Himalayan region since 1960,
and over these fifty years, they’re displaying some of the 400,000 pressed plant specimens that have formed the foundation of Himalayan plant research.
Usually most of the exhibitions here (excluding permanent displays) allow photography, but not this time.
There was old footage playing, and it was just… intense.
They climb up to elevations of 23,000 feet, collect specimens, prepare them to some degree, and then descend.
And what’s amazing is that all this work is done analog, so I really felt for them.
