My home internet suddenly became slow
starting around the London Olympics (July 27 to August 12, 2012)
YouTube and videos required about 5 minutes of buffering before playing
Sites with images made me wait 2 minutes
I wondered if it had always been this slow
I wanted a benchmark to judge by
so I ran a speed test to see…
0.4 Mbps…. what?
When things got worse, it dropped to 0.2 Mbps
Well, I’m home after work
so I don’t use the PC that much anyway, so I figured it was okay
Three months passed
but eventually I started feeling stressed about it.
When I searched online, I found plenty of people in the same situation
and I looked at various solutions
but nothing worked at all.
After testing various things and using process of elimination
it came down to two possibilities: “modem failure or degraded phone line”
But could that really happen?
I wondered if such a thing was possible
Since it’s electrical and mechanical equipment, maybe it could happen
While I was pondering this
by chance
I tripped a circuit breaker.
(The PC wasn’t running)
Not the main one, but one of the smaller
“individual circuit breaker”
The usual “turn off the modem and leave it off for a few hours” trick had never worked for me at all.
After that, everything went back to normal, with no stress like before the Olympics
and I was getting a smooth 3 Mbps★
When I measured the shop’s fiber connection, it was getting about 70 Mbps
Maybe if you trip the small circuit breaker that goes through the modem, it might fix it too?
