We used an M12×P1.25 internal-external tap (plug tap) that you barely use in a lifetime to fix the remaining threads and make it work. We managed to pull it off.
Pretty dusty in there.
Clean it up
Replace the pads and we’re done.
I think the secret to keeping things clean and long-lasting is thorough cleaning and rust prevention.
