It’s in pretty rough shape. It’s sad how many people don’t pay attention to the rear brake disc. The rear caliper also looks dirtier than the front one.
It’s a simple check, but measuring the thickness gives peace of mind.

A stiff caliper usually means the seals have deteriorated.
Working a sluggish caliper for 30 minutes to an hour is only for emergencies. It helps a little, but it’s just a temporary fix.
Disassembling it is faster and more effective.
It took decades to erode it this much… Thanks for your hard work, dirt.
The power of good tools is amazing. I used to try all sorts of methods to clean things.
Looking back, despite spending all that time, things didn’t get very clean, and I’d think “this is the limit of what I can do now.” But now in the 21st century, tools keep advancing, and we’ve entered an era where we can get things cleaner in less time.
It’s easier on the person doing the work, and we can work in a clean environment.
After checking everything, we reassemble and the rear caliper is done.
We could have made the brake hose with the fittings we have on hand, but it felt like “hmm, maybe a little more?” so we’re waiting for materials to arrive.
The engine oil is super clean.
We cleaned up the filter cover too.
