YZF-R1 Inspection, Self-Point Maintenance, ELF Oil Change

Inspection, self-point maintenance, and ELF oil change service.

The air filter was dirty, so we replaced it. Ram-air models tend to show dirt buildup pretty noticeably.

We lubricated the clutch lever and cable. There was still some oil from last time, so it’s in good shape.

We also cleaned the rear caliper. It has the original single-piston aluminum design. In hindsight, I wish I’d measured the diameter…

When it comes out clean, the next step is polishing and so on.

We removed the rear wheel. We cleaned the inside of the swingarm as much as we could and applied rust preventative.

Wheel design keeps improving every day.

The wheel bearings are in solid condition.

We took our time cleaning the underside of the fender too.

The inverted fork’s weak point. We cleaned the inside and applied rust preventative. No rust means longer life.

The caliper was in good condition. We washed it and applied rust preventative.

Coolant is something you want to change at least once every two years, even if you skip a year.
Water-cooled engines heat up fast. No matter how good the cooling is, if you get stuck in heavy traffic or long traffic lights, the temperature can get dangerously high. For long red lights, I think it’s fine to turn the engine off.

Temperature rises → coolant returns to the reservoir → if severe, it overflows from the reservoir → temperature drops and coolant returns from the reservoir to the radiator → reservoir level drops and eventually runs empty → radiator also has low coolant → engine gets hot and that’s rough.

We changed the fluid.

The engine oil is ELF MOTO4RACE 10W-60.
