GSF1200 (Late) Main Harness Replacement Self-Point Maintenance

I’ve noticed something recently that I wanted to report on.

The GSF1200, which we hardly ever see anymore these days—I wonder where they’ve all gone.
We had a request for main harness replacement and self-point maintenance.
As for the GSF1200 main harness, only the late model (igniter waterproof connector) is available now. It seems the reverse-spec version isn’t available either. Basically it’s usable, so there’s no problem. (Some rewiring is necessary though.)

The reason I recommend main harness replacement is
• While you own the bike, electrical worries drop dramatically
• For models where reproduction isn’t expected, you can only replace the harness while new ones are still available
• OEM part prices only go up, never down
• Most used bikes you acquire have had unauthorized modifications to the harness (turn signals, digital gauges, grip heaters, cigarette lighter or USB power outlets, etc.)

Replacing it gives you a huge boost in peace of mind.
Even when brand new, sometimes everything gets consolidated to a single part number. There’s a possibility of leftover connectors or parts, so you do need to inspect the old and new side by side.

*It’s good practice to always tape over any leftover connectors.
Harness replacement on bikes from this era is extremely smooth. If it’s just replacement without cleaning, I’m confident I can finish in an hour, but when you factor in cleaning and planning the layout for optional power, ETC, and such, it takes quite a bit of time.

*The setup takes longer than the actual replacement work itself.
If harness replacement feels overwhelming at first, it helps to break it down into smaller tasks.

Start by removing the rear section, then the igniter, then the handlebar switches, and so on.
With this model year, it’s almost all connectors, so no guesswork needed. The layout is also pretty spacious, making it easy. (The Inazuma 1200 is a different story though.)
This is the only time you can really clean those hard-to-reach spots deep inside, so doing a thorough job means a clean engine bay and trouble-free operation—that’s my wish.
The other day, I got a message from a customer’s acquaintance’s colleague, and I promptly ordered this.
King Jim Tape Cartridge Tepra PRO Cable Label 24mm SV24K

Previously I was using KING JIM Tepra PRO Tape Heat Shrink Tubing White/Black Text SU11S , but when it shrinks, the text naturally gets smaller too. The shrink tubing is rough, so it gets dirty easily, and I was worried the text might fade—so I ditched it.

I’d been hoping something better would come along recently, so this is really helpful.

There are King Jim fans and Brother fans out there, so choosing your first machine is really tough…

By the way, we use King Jim Label Printer “Tepra” PRO SR5500P SR5500P . I think it gets easier to use every year.
• Caliper support has shims installed
• Front and rear suspension settings
• Inspection due date
• Air filter replacement interval
• Ignition coil numbers
And so on—having these labeled is really convenient. It’s better than writing messy marker notes, I think.

Anyway, back to the topic: King Jim Tape Cartridge Tepra PRO Cable Label 24mm SV24K prints on the white section and wraps it with clear laminate, so it’s very easy to use and easy to read.

We replaced the spark plug. JR8B
Marking the numbers makes things easier later.
We’ll replace the air filter too. (Currently on order.)
The calipers had quite a bit of brake dust buildup. Operation should be fine though.
We replaced the fluid with CCI (Chuo Kakohki Inc.) Golden Cruiser Brake Fluid DOT4 211814 .
The reservoir mounting bolts can be replaced every other time or even every time—I think either is fine.
When we replaced the chain case mounting bolts, we cleaned things up nicely. For times like this,

work great—you can use them aggressively even in dirty spots. If they don’t tear, you can reuse them, so they’re really excellent.
With gloves on, this is a good time to scrub down spots like these. It’s 98% complete.
