I haven’t researched exactly when this became standard practice.
However,
I only learned about it at the end of last year, 2022.
My grinder is in perfect working order, so I never bothered to look into new features.
“Maybe it’s not actually that well known?”
Thinking that,
I decided to write down whatever came to mind about its convenience and drawbacks.

However, traditional grinders are ON“at full power all the time”
You have to turn off the switch on the handle.
In other words,“both hands are needed for ON/OFF operation”and
if you drop it or it flies away, there’s a danger.
The paddle switch“is not like an accelerator”
You can’t adjust rotation with subtle grip pressure
Squeeze to turn ON, release to turn OFFThat’s all.
When OFF, the residual rotation is minimal and stops quickly.
Dial Rotation Adjustment Expands Possibilities
Sometimes you want to reduce the rotation a bit
and grind “safely,” “delicately,” and “boldly.”
With a belt sander it takes timeand feels “a bit tedious.”
You want togrind a bit more quickly.Now that’s possible too.
It’s almost like using a grinder the way you’d use a belt sander.
“Auto-shift” feature
“A function that reduces rotation from high to low”
From high rotation and light load, suddenly“Grrrr!”it bites in,
and when it becomes heavy load,“it automatically reduces rotation”and shifts to torque mode.
Wow! (´ー｀)
And if you apply even more load,the “AFT”circuit activates and stops operation.
Safety is extremely high.
Whirrrrr! Grrrrr…
STOP—that’s the idea.
*Don’t rely on it too much. It’s convenient, sure enough.
The dial shift has 5 stages—this is quite revolutionary.
Truly! It’s quite revolutionary.
I used to use a 100V rotation controller for rotation adjustment.
But the rotation controller“doesn’t keep rotation stable,”and
when you reduce rotation,“there’s no torque.”
In other words, it’s not usable.
Yet recently, Makita grinders have adopted this as standard.
Ididn’t know things had progressed this much until last year.
*Other manufacturers also widely adopt paddle switches and brakes
Electric grinders seemed like the same old thing,
“nothing special,”with no real changes.
But it seems 21st-century grinders have actually moved forward a bit.
(Drawbacks) Usability depends on your application.
For people who keep the power on and use it continuously,it’s “not suitable.”
You have to keep squeezing the switch.
That gets tiring.
(Drawback) It’s heavy because it has a battery.
*Battery-powered
Since the battery is mounted on the end,you definitely feel the weight.
Switching to a smaller capacity battery would help a bit.
(Drawback) It’s longer because it has a battery.
The battery mount & batterymake it“considerably longer than traditional models.”
This is compared to“ordinary grinders.”
Standard 100V grinders with basic features are about“260MM”long.
But the GA418D and similar models are“382MM,”which means
“120MM”longer.
Continuous use, weight, and length are indeed drawbacks, but
While there are certainly drawbacks, I think these really only apply
to “continuous use.”
For people who want to grind“here and there”for short periods,
“This is the grinder I’ve been waiting for!”—that’s what you might feel.
Power tools and batteries have evolved more than we realize.
When you think “I wish that existed,”and
you research the product,there’s a good chance something revolutionary has already happened.
After all, it’s the 21st century now… (*´ω｀*)
