This is a GPZ 750 in exceptionally good condition.
I’ve repaired it once before, but the indicator lamp goes out when turning the handlebar—it’s happening again.
Last time, the solder joint on the key connector had come loose.
I thought it might be the same issue this time, but it turned out to be a bit different.
Old air-cooled bikes have really excellent serviceability (*´ω｀*)
Lately, I’ve been really drawn to the square-headlight naked bikes.
While there are quite a few bolts to remove, the structure is easy to understand at a glance—that’s really satisfying.
The brown wire (power side) was fraying.
Since this area was wrapped up with tape,
it flexed loosely from the end of the fixed metal arm and gradually broke.
Both the outer sheath and inner conductor of the wiring lose their flexibility over time.
I’ll proceed carefully to avoid making any mistakes
I want to disconnect the wiring from the main body, but I’d prefer to apply as little heat as possible.
I’m proceeding carefully and methodically, without rushing, and making sure not to burn myself.
I disconnected and reconnected the existing wiring with a whoosh!
It really makes you appreciate what an old bike this is.
When the electrical harness is properly maintained, it really gives you peace of mind.
I’ll protect it using modern materials
At the metal fittings, I’ll use heat shrink tubing to keep things soft and protected.
Where the wiring might rub when turning the handlebar left and right, I’ll use shape-memory tubing for protection.
This is a shape-memory braided tubing that can be wrapped on from the outside.
It’s such a convenient material that I’d recommend keeping various sizes in stock.
