I did some poking around asking Mitsuba Sankowa to explain.
All Mitsuba Sankowa motorcycle ETC models can be used from 2022 onward. That’s what they told us.
Wait, I heard on TV that ETC stops working in 2022…
I bet a lot of people are surprised by that.
Actually, there are two types of standards related to ETC.
① Spurious emissions standard governing radio wave use
② Security standard for ensuring ETC information safety
Recently, both ① and ② standards have been updated.
What changed?
The ① spurious emissions standard defines radio wave strength and such.
It’s a rule saying products that use radio waves must comply with this strength level.
The ETC rules within this spurious emissions standard have changed.
The new rule applies to certain models that received technical certification before 2007.
Mitsuba Sankowa ETC debuted in 2010, so…
all models comply with the new spurious emissions standard.
There’s no problem with ①.
Let me go back to ② the security standard for ensuring ETC information safety.
The security standard for ensuring ETC information safety is set by the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism
for ETC (toll booths, in-vehicle units, IC cards) to prevent fraud such as eavesdropping and tampering.
It’s a standard for ensuring information safety.
To put it simply, it’s a rule that sets security standards
to prevent information from being extracted from your ETC.
Older security standard ETC units may eventually become unusable,
but rest assured it won’t be as soon as 2022.
With ②, the newer standard is more reassuring.
