2017. A new year has begun.

Happy New Year. We’ve been blessed to welcome another new year in 2017. I wish health and happiness for everyone, including myself.

I really do feel time passing faster with each year.

I can’t assume I’ll stay healthy and keep working the same way forever. Eventually, I’ll have to close the shop. I understand this intellectually, but I think of it as something far in the future that I don’t really dwell on. Yet I often think that the final station might be rushing toward me faster than I realize.

I’m not making any explicit declaration, but I think I should decide on certain things to some degree. That time could be invested effectively in various ways.

Last year, there was a big trend (?) about the 50-year plan.

As people live longer, they tend to take more time making decisions while managing risks. I think that spending the next ten years or so thinking this way, rather than just drifting along without thought, will make a real difference in judgment when that situation finally arrives.

The shop gets updated roughly every three years. (Though some are five years or different intervals.)

I thought about updating maybe three more times and then moving somewhere else—there was that trendy (?) talk last year about where to relocate. But I ended up not deciding anything…

To be honest, I find it hard to believe that sharpness increases with age. I’m still fine now, but in the future I’ll develop presbyopia, and my knees and back will start acting up. There’s also the possibility of serious illness. I can’t imagine continuing the same way I do now.

First and foremost, I always think that health, physical conditioning, and injury prevention are what matter most.

Taking three days off sick with a cold and recovering poorly is completely different from taking three days off while healthy—even though it’s the same amount of time. Everyone would prefer the latter.

So in the end?

Injuries and illness are basically your own responsibility. Unless something completely unexpected falls from the sky, I want to manage myself and make 2017 a year with zero pain.

How much longer will there be work related to motorcycles? My worries never end.

Finally,

One good deed a day, even if it’s something small I’ve been doing for years. Picking up a can on the ground is fine. Giving up your seat is fine. Letting someone go first at the register is fine. Yielding on the road while driving is fine.

I sometimes think about what would happen if the entire population did this—it would be incredible.

I think that feeling grateful and saying thank you, apart from exchanges of money or goods, is actually what matters.

I pray that this year will be one of peace, safety, and good health.
